    D&D 5E (2014) Gnomes aren't Fey?

Are gnomes not considered Fey in 5e? I wonder why they felt the need to revert this, as making them small fey creatures akin to elves was more interesting by far than they ever were as just smaller versions of dwarves. I suppose it's an easy thing to houserule, but I also dislike how they...

Modifying Cleric to be more like Wizard

Well, it's not just historic - it's what is prevalent in other fantasy media. Priests even in the context of fantasy are usually robed spellcasters and not armored mace-wielders. It's kind of lame that there's nothing in the core rules to mirror that archetype.

Modifying Cleric to be more like Wizard

This has always been a slight pet peeve of mind about D&D - that the standard cleric is an armor clad warpriest rather than the more common and anachronistically appropriate scholarly theologian. It annoys me that they always just push the former rather than at least finding a way to bake the...

    Ability Scores 2.0

Actually, what might make more sense than that even is to use an injury system that's tied to critical hits. That way, Dex isn't about just straight HP damage as much as its about dealing injurious blows. It becomes more of a utilitarian thing than an attrition thing.

    Ability Scores 2.0

So, this is what I'll playtest first, using a modified table for sneak attacks since Rogues essentially get double the effect from Dex (maximum of 6d6 damage at level 18) Reduce Critical hit range by Dex bonus On Critical hit, roll weapon damage twice and add Dex modifier to the total (in...

    Ability Scores 2.0

It isn't multiplicative, because crits don't affect damage modifiers, only die rolls. Moreover, the changes to the other stats make them competitive, and most people are not min/maxers anyway. Furthermore, the math is much more nuanced than you let on.The bonus you get from frequent critting...

So, then, do you increase con scores for larger creatures?

    Starting Bonus HP

Hmm... interesting. In my games, other than HP, con mostly represents resistance to disease and endurance (injury is primarily governed by strength). Neither of those things should necessarily relate to a creature's size. I think maybe I'll try using your bonus HP rules, but also impose a...

    Starting Bonus HP

Well, video games aren't trying to represent any degree of realism in their combat systems, so it's not quite the same. Also, I've seen some pretty slick wound based systems that seem to be pretty realistic, balanced, and easy to play. But, that's a whole different discussion. I think my...

    Starting Bonus HP

That's a pretty good idea, but it really highlights the problems with HP in general. I really wish they'd moved to a somewhat more realistic system in this edition.

    Ability Scores 2.0

You still aren't understanding, although it's probable I didn't articulate it well. Weapon users still don't need more than one stat. Weapon users with only Str are exactly as effective as spellcasters with only Tha, and weapon users with dex using a light weapon should be as well, although how...

    Ability Scores 2.0

A few things to keep in mind here - I did rescind on halving the modifier. I agree the full Dex modifier should apply to the crit range. Separating Agility from Dexterity was one of the main reasons I did this, as I do conceptually believe they should be separate. Yeah, it'll be a bit tougher...

    Let's talk whips...

One thing worth considering with the whip is how long the skill spectrum is in using one effectively, which is not true of most simple weapons (you have a basic ability to wield it, or you don't). Someone merely being "proficient" in the use of the whip is not likely to be able to do nearly as...

I've spent the past few months breaking down the Ranger and trying to find some common ground across different fan expectations. Here's what I've got.

But it's important to note there's a double standard here. What you said above is true for a lot of other classes as well. The Ranger is merely the one that gets singled out for it. One reason why is because people perceive it to lack a unifying mechanic (other than beastmaster), but that's not...

I've spent the past few months breaking down the Ranger and trying to find some common ground across different fan expectations. Here's what I've got.

I'm still reviewing some of the details, but I have to say, this looks very, very similar to what I would have done and to many of the things I've thought about when reviewing the Ranger in the past. I think the idea that the ranger is fundamentally borked as a concept and needs to be completely...

Low Magic Alternatives: Full 20 level Class, The Scholar (alchemist fans, apply here)

Neat concept. I'll post some thoughts shortly.

    Starting Bonus HP

Starting HP being barely higher than the HP you gain per level is one of the most eye-rolling steps backward they took with 5e. It doesn't make any thematic sense and makes low level play way, way too luck dependent. 4e probably started you with too many, but the idea was sound. Even though...

    Ability Scores 2.0

I updated the original post with a character sheet. Here's my current thinking on Sanity (will probably need to be refined over time) - Characters have sanity points equal to 1/2 level + 1/2 wisdom score. Sanity is intended to be used very situationally, as outlined in the DMG. Resisting...

    Ability Scores 2.0

Thanks for the feedback. Saving throws are the same for the most part. They're already so subject to DM arbitration that I think it works well as is. As you said, many classes still get secondary benefits from various stats as a bit of incentive to play thematically appropriate characters...
