Do you allow electronics at your gaming table?

ShinHakkaider, what about physical size limits? You still get to bring your "toys" but the need to be such and such dimensions or less?

First Edition Feel: Why Is This a Good Thing?

Conceptually, I agree this was a weird idea, and I've never played 1st Edition though I have played some version of OD&D.

    Is D&D "Rubbish"?

There are many things I have come to dislike about D&D, chief among them "it's what everyone knows". Because of the chief reason, I will continue to play D&D and variants because it's easier to find players or a GM for it.

D&D 3.x What great third party 3E product did I miss?

I'm pretty sure most of those are 1st party.

D&D 3.x What great third party 3E product did I miss?

I don't know if I'd consider them great, but I am fond of the Diomin dark fantasy setting and the Forbidden Kingdoms "pulp" setting (a better d20 Modern than d20 Modern to me), both by OtherWorld Creations, Inc. Diomin has some holdovers from 2E, but at least you're given a cultural reason for...

Do you allow electronics at your gaming table?

I'd say part of the answer to that question depends on where you're gaming. For example, were I to host a game in my apartment (which I may do), it's simply a matter of space: I don't have room for everyone to be on a laptop. Use them to look up rules, keep track of your character, but please...

So what do you guys think of 2nd edition psionics?

I used to be on the side of "Magic and 'Psionics'" are different. The beginning of your "rant" reminds me of how I think "bionics" was misused in Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman: their cybernetic implants are entirely mechanical and don't rely on their biological functions. As much as I...

    arguments over physics

I've read that there's a Batman Beyond episode where that happens to the villain because of a magic/science belt that allows him to phase through solid matter. Eventually he got so good at it, he didn't need the belt. Unfortunately, he's now permanently phased and alive at the center of the...

So what do you guys think of 2nd edition psionics?

I'm not concerned with combat balance, as most parties in literature and movies are not balanced. At the same time, I have to say I preferred the revised 2e psionics that came out because of the revised Dark Sun setting. Mental Armor Class and Mental THAC0 smoothed some of the ideas from the...

    Laptops at the gaming table

How about just a sticky? This topic comes up at least once a quarter. Right now we even have this one and "electronics at the table". Should probably sticky that too.

Do you allow electronics at your gaming table?

I'm actually having an issue with my Pathfinder GM using his electronics at the table to run the game. Mostly because it's actually slowing down what would much more quickly looked up in a rulebook, or written down with pencil and paper. All of his players have electronics, that we all put away...

So what do you guys think of 2nd edition psionics?

I need to ask, which version of 2nd Edition psionics? The first printing or the remake after the revised Dark Sun setting? As someone who had Dark Sun, I had to use a little of the psionics rules. Probably the "best" power was "Synaptic Static": turn off all psionics in a given range for a...

    Looking for a recruiting flyer.

System neutral may not get as much as attention as system specific or a small selection of systems. Gamers "on the street" like to know what they're getting into, and curious potential gamers also need a little more.

Should I let my character be instantly killed?

I'm mostly with JRRNeiklot, unless it's something like Toon, where you "die" then come back a few minutes later. That said, there are times when I allow a slight amount of wiggle room. In a game that never finished, at least so far as I know, my character and another were in a situation where we...

AD&D; Are 1st and 2nd Edition the Same?

I think 5E backgrounds are there to give a little flavor to the character if the player can't or doesn't want to think of backstory on their own. Also, the ones given are "here's some stuff you did, here's a mechanical benefit from it" to me. Wonder how I missed that, I had/have lots of...

AD&D; Are 1st and 2nd Edition the Same?

2E had Weapon and Nonweapon proficiencies, which started front loaded, and then trickled in as you leveled. It also had the option of "Secondary Skill" which was random, and was more of a background thing than a skill. Granted, 2E also assumed a basic level of competency in some things: everyone...

Does anyone have a recommendation for the best Virtual Tabletop program?

I need to check, and possibly update, my RPGNow account. A long time ago, I bought the GM license for Fantasy Grounds. The system worked well, though I could have used more instructions on the drag and drop to use my actual modifiers. On the other hand, I did find the manual for programming...

AD&D; Are 1st and 2nd Edition the Same?

I knew I forgot AC. That said, before 3E was officially out, I ran a short between editions adventure using the rules of 3E that had been made available at the time. Once I played "O" D&D at a convention, though I don't recall which version. Were I ever to backtrack, I'd use 2E because even...

AD&D; Are 1st and 2nd Edition the Same?

2e: +X weapon = -X THAC0/+X damage 3e+: +X weapon = +X BAB Mod/+X damage The issue is seeing the plus and having to subtract it. It's not that the math's difficult, it's that some people's minds disconnect when "add" really means "subtract". Even I had a problem with it at first.

AD&D; Are 1st and 2nd Edition the Same?

I think that's where some people had the disconnect: If I need number X to hit AC 0, I need X-AC(Y) to hit AC Y. The more I think about it, the more I realize I actually have more problems with 2E than I thought I did. Plusses that are actually minuses, for example.
