Problem with Astral Plane = Backstage

You sirrah, amuse me. Gnomes? Adle-coved! If she's a collection of smaller beings, they are clearly cranium rats. Ah, but where do the high ups go to meet the stars?

Problem with Astral Plane = Backstage

It's not calling it backstage I have a problem with, it's "nobody's supposed to go there". Of course PS was a mind screw of its own with "different sizes of infinity": infinitely large planes touching other infinitely large planes, in a larger infinitely large multiverse. If you think of the...

How to design a game where players don't seek to min-max

Another "generic fantasy" RPG I like, HARP Fantasy, has diminishing return on investments. Sure, your skills start out giving you +5 per rank until rank 10, which you could easily reach by level 3, then +2 per rank until rank 20, and each rank adding only +1 from rank 21 on. From what I've seen...

Problem with Astral Plane = Backstage

Probably earlier than 2nd edition too. Anyway, as a Planescape fan, I have no problem with the idea of the Astral being the Multiverse's backstage. What I object to, as an on/off theater person, is the idea that "no one's supposed to go there". Yes, people are supposed to be backstage, that's...

How to design a game where players don't seek to min-max

I find that min/maxing is often self-punishing. What you trade off for in exchange for optimization in one thing (or a few), makes you bad at nearly everything else. I admit it's taken me several years of gaming to come to this conclusion. There is of course, always the option of letting the...

    New News Page Layout

I didn't like the first version, but the table format just works.

    [HARP][HARP Sci-Fi] Anyone Playing? Planning?

I'm definitely going to need to rework the professional abilities of two characters from the one shot I ran in 2011, as they belong to professions that actually changed a little.

    [HARP][HARP Sci-Fi] Anyone Playing? Planning?

As you know from my presence on the ICE forums, I am a fan. None of your poll options quite fit what I'm doing with HARP right now. Here are a few things I have in mind, one of which you may have noticed at ICE: 1. Update characters I made for a one shot adventure from HARP Revised to HARP...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

Drow were magitek savvy in 2E. Granted, the items had to be returned to the Underdark every week or they'd decay, but they even made replacement limbs that functioned like automail from Full Metal Alchemist, way before I ever saw that anime.

    Problem players and you

Except that the why is right there in the post you quoted. He doesn't want the rest of the party to know the total amount of loot. Why wouldn't he want to know them to know that? This is a player I'd boot, with no explanation. He's already laid his hand on the table.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: The Multiverse

Wait? Isn't that Hagrid? I knew Knockturn Alley was part of Sigil. In the Hive Ward, obviously.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: The Multiverse

Some of my college friends and I joked about the setup of the Great Wheel cosmology including Sigil. The Outlands is a pancake, The Spire is syrup, and Sigil is a donut. Which raises the question of why you're pouring your infinite syrup through a donut?

What D&D cliches are you sick of?

    Kitchen? Yes. Meta-sink? No.

What D&D cliches are you sick of?

From what I understand, Ravenloft started as an adventure that wasn't a demiplane before it became a setting. Once the Dark Powers' rules for drawing someone to the Domains of Dread were drawn out, it was guaranteed to become a kitchen sink.

What D&D cliches are you sick of?

Especially when one meta-kitchen sink contains the other meta-kitchen sink. Be sure to be specific when you're ordering squid in the side comments of a Planescape book. As a GM, I went with inclusive with Planescape. Ultimately, I found it worked better if they were all planar characters or all...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: The Multiverse

I see this sample is keeping the overly long names.

What D&D cliches are you sick of?

You'd need to get rid of Planescape, Ravenloft, and Spelljammer too. I think that covers the kitchen sinks.

What D&D cliches are you sick of?

I think I'm complaining about the idea that some people on message boards have that a peasant would get raised from the dead. Most likely not. On the other hand, the clergy might like casting "Cure Disease" spells to promote their religion. Perhaps I'm also blaming the concept of magic shops...

What D&D cliches are you sick of?

The assumption that even in a world where magic is known about, that it's cheap, everyone has access to it, and the spellcasters want to cast it for you.
