D&D General D&D art, which artists best established each edition or setting?

The artist I associate with my oldest, fondest memories of the hobby is Jim Holloway, who drew memorable illustrations for the 1982 French edition of D&D.

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

Oh yes. One could make momentum into the equivalent of 13th Age escalation die.

Critical Role Why Critical Role is so successful...

It was made by TSR. Wizards of the Coast didn’t exist back then.
  4. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

Attrition could work both ways. What if every short rest comes with diminishing results?

Critical Role Why Critical Role is so successful...

Yes, brilliant idea. Let's do it.

Critical Role Why Critical Role is so successful...

Thank you ! I thought it was about Critical Role, and since I don't have the time to watch hundreds of hours of people playing, I was not interested. But I have eleven minutes of free time ;)

Level Up (A5E) possible way of fixing carrying capacity

In my opinion, we only need two systems: 1) A "how much can you carry" system (which most people will ignore, but it's nice to have. 2) A "what happens when I'm carrying a double bass or some other kind of very cumbersome object" system.

Critical Role Why Critical Role is so successful...

This thread made me want to read again the Dungeon Master's Guide section about exploration, thinking that I would find valuable information there - it is, after all, one of the Three Pillars. I did not expect to find two boring pages dealing almost exclusively with visibility and travel speed...

Level Up (A5E) Rules about technology

There’s something similar in the Rules Cyclopedia, so it’s not unprecedented.
  10. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

    It's not "people", it's "adventurers."
  11. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

It does seem that many of those things that people now find obviously "problematic" and unacceptable felt perfectly acceptable just five years ago. Surely that shows us that we should all show some degree of humility when throwing around epithets of all kind.

Level Up (A5E) Rules about technology

Firearms, steam engines, clocks, explosives, siege weapons, automata: should "Level Up" include detailed rules about technology and science? What kind of stuff would you include? What should absolutely not be there? Should there be a Savant class? How would you balance science with magic?
  13. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

It is also quite different from what D&D has always been. Right now a character is defined by an addition of layers: class, subclass, race, background, etc... Each of them brings different advantages and abilities. There's nothing wrong with point-buy systems and floating bonuses, but if that's...
  14. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

That’s not how it works either. The only way to "prove" that it works is to playtest it, and if I did that, nothing would force you to believe me.
  15. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

Sorry, in what way is that the opposite?
  16. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

Very different games sometimes share similar rules. I don't see how you've demonstrated that "it couldn't work."
  17. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

Oh well. Describing flesh and blood, sentient beings with numbers is, in itself, a particularly abhorrent form of social violence and these days, finding anything within the realm of roleplaying games that is not at least slightly problematic is simply inconceivable. Or: giving bonuses to...
  18. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

Exactly. If the broad approach I'm describing works for a game that specifically deals with cultures, it should be more than good enough for a game that doesn't.
  19. The Mirrorball Man

Level Up (A5E) Changes to race (species?)

Again, is Civilization "inherently racist"? Because it does just that.
