D&D 5E (2024) Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth? - Languages in 2024

Something I'm going to incorporate is based on how I currently run languages in my Greyhawk campaign. All PCs start with a "racial/cultural" language based on where they grow up, the Common trade tongue (unless they grew up in a major cultural metropolis where it would be the cultural language)...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

While I'm still going to get the books, I'll admit I'm quite concerned with the number of rules issues they've created. I wonder how much of it was inadvertent and how much was deliberate.

    D&D General Who shouldn't play D&D

RPGs aren't for everyone, and neither is D&D. I've introduced dozens of people to D&D who never took to it. Most just never got into RPGs, but a handful of others found enjoyment in other RPGs. Everyone has a personal preference.

D&D General Darkvision, Dim Light, and Disadvantage

In the entirety of 5E, I've never had a party always go full darkvision. The Perception penalty is too much of problem, allowing the party to be frequently surprised (which under 2014 rules is really bad). We've always had light sources, turning the dim light into bright light to negate the...

D&D 5E (2024) Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.

This is because the surveys never addressed the change. I noticed it immediately, yet it was never in any of the playtest surveys. WotC made up their mind and wasn't going to hear input from the players about it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

Potions of Healing being common equipment, and the new use of them as a bonus action. I'll continue to replace them with Herbs of Healing, which is a non-magical version that takes 1 minute to apply. Potions of Healing can be found as treasure, just like every other magic item.

D&D General Not the Wicked Witch: Revisiting the Legacy of Lorraine Williams

Lorraine Williams probably wasn't quite the villain she's been made out to be, but she was always going to be the villain. TSR needed to move into a more realistic business model that Gygax simply wasn't going to provide, but whoever took the reins after him was going to be the bad guy. Maybe if...

D&D 5E (2024) DMs, what makes running D&D fun for you?

It's really hard to say. Sometimes being a DM is an ordeal, but with the right group it's the best experience. There's a lot about it I enjoy, but I think providing challenges for the players to overcome is what I enjoy best. I'm fairly evil in my design stage, but during the sessions I try to...

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Players Handbook: Personality and Appearance is now part of the Abilities (not background or species) - NEW Alignment decriptions.

Technically you should do Ability Scores first then, since that sets your inherent talents. Personally I go Race, Class, Ability Score, then Background.

    D&D 5E (2024) Influence Action

No, but I sadly suspect that Bonds/Traits/Flaws won't even make it into 5.5

    I think that's what advantage/disadvantage is for.

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

I can't comment on PF or PF2, but I've been successfully running dungeon crawls in 5E with relative ease. I took the "travel activities" and made a few modifications for use in site based locations, rather than overland travel. I stole the idea of exploration turns from older editions...

D&D General In Celebration of Over The Top Violence in D&D

While not quite Deadpool & Wolverine level, I do tend to put my violence descriptions into the R rating.

D&D General What do you prefer to give/get XP for?

I generally go with "overcoming challenges," but those can also be individual tasks. For things like tricks and traps, I give each a CR and character multiplier based on the number of characters it is likely to affect. I also give xp for planned social encounters, also with a CR, where the party...

D&D General A History of Violence: Killing in D&D

Combat ethics are not something I've normally had to deal with over the decades, but I have to say the combat seems to be the first option most players consider. Even back in AD&D, when players were incentivized to avoid combat (the risk/reward ratio was bad), there were players who thought with...

D&D General Greyhawk outside the Flanness

Back in 1E, my Greyhawk world had Mystara as the other side of the world. It didn't fit quite right, but nobody cared. I also incorporated the Hollow Earth, accessible via a portal beyond the Land of Black Ice.

    D&D 5E (2024) The 10 Species in "Your Ideal 2024 PHB"

Human Aasimar Dwarf Elf Genasi Gnome Half-Elf Half-Orc Halfling Tiefling I feel the "descendant" races of Goliath and Dragonborn just aren't as interesting as the half-races.

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

I used them back when we played face to face. It was important to hide my notes and while I did hide all my rolls, it was to keep the players from knowing which rolls were important (I despise when a DM fudges). Since we play online, everything I would need a screen for is provided by the VTT...
