    D&D 5E (2024) Magic Items In 5.5

This is exactly why I won't allow players to just pick their items. When I started Vecna: Eve of Ruin at 10th level, I rolled up the treasure the characters would have gained over those levels, with a few alternatives for class specific items. The players felt that is was actually more enjoyable...

D&D General Looking for Skype alternatives

Our group used Skype for years, but then switched over to Discord. I wasn't thrilled with the change, but eventually got used to it. If you use Roll20, I know there's a voice feature option, but we've never used it.

D&D General How would you feel if Official Adventures only covered 3 levels?

Having just finished Vecna: Eve of Ruin, I think this is an intentional design decision to keep the story moving. While I personally prefer 3-5 sessions per level, APs generally don't have that much space per chapter. If you run using XP, no APs provide anywhere near enough to level. I think...

D&D 5E (2024) If Your Builds Not Online By Level 6 Dont Bother?

I think something that people who theorycraft don't care about is how a build actually plays before being "online." Most of them seem to assume the build based on starting level. A lot of builds I've seen are really, really terrible before they get online. I've saw one in 3E that came online at...

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcane Recovery strategy

Lots of factors here, but in general the higher level spell slot is going to be better. However, 4th level spells generally feel like they punch below their weight, and 3rd level spells feel like they punch above their weight. Because of this, I'd probably go with a 3rd and a 1st. If a 5th level...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

You kinda proved my point. Every example I've seen that's game breaking involves using the same bonus action twice in a turn. To use your example, would it be game breaking to banish a demon and cast Healing Word or Spiritual Weapon? Not really. If you limit it to different actions, it only...

    D&D 5E (2024) I attack the darkness!

In 2014, we changed it to "creatures that can see you gain advantage to attack you." In reality, swinging weapons in darkness is just going to be a flurry of misses by both sides. We'll probably keep the same houserule in 2024.

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

You misunderstand. The original reference was using your Action to take an additional Bonus Action. In general, Bonus Actions are less useful than Actions, so giving up an Action to take a second Bonus Action is not particularly game breaking. Every example I've seen where it breaks the game...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

In reality, using two different bonus action abilities on a turn isn't game breaking by any stretch. The only examples I've seen where it could be an issue is using the same bonus action in a turn, such as for Spiritual Weapon. Despite not having played 2024 yet, I've already houseruled this...

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

Generally I roll out every combat. The only exception is when down to the last (significant) enemy who's statistically going to die before their next turn. After their last turn, most of the time I'll call the fight in order to move the game along. It helps keep things from being a slog taking...

D&D 5E (2024) Potion miscibility, permanent effects and using potions in the future.

I would roll randomly to see which effect is made permanent until dispelled. However, since they will always have the potion effect active, every time they drink a potion they have to roll on the table again... even a potion of healing. I wouldn't tell the player that, but they could figure it...

D&D General What races/species populate your DnD world?

The Flanaess in my Greyhawk campaign is about 40% humans, who dominate the political landscape. Even places that are ruled by other races are predominately human in population. About 40% is made up of the various "evil humanoids" (kobolds, goblinoids, gnolls, etc.). They actually outproduce...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I think this is also something that's often overlooked, and is a problem for published adventures, since they don't know which one the DM will be using. Since I use a VTT, with the mini's already on the map, I don't bother describing the size of the area, because it's already obvious, and I...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5.0 Retrospective. Races Most/Least Popular (anecdotes).

I've seen a lot of humans, elves, half-elves, and dwarves. Gnomes, halflings, and half-orcs haven't been really popular, but have seen some play. I've been the only one to play a teifling, and I don't think we've seen a dragonborn (if we have, I've forgotten). Non-PHB races have generally been...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I personally dislike the cardinal directions because the party may not know the cardinal direction. Old adventures tried very hard to confuse map makers and try and get the party lost, so using cardinal directions messes with that idea. Personally I prefer vague descriptions when dealing with...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

Depends on how it's done. Short room descriptions are useful, but leave details in the non-boxed text. It should be long enough to give players ideas of what actions they want to take, but short enough to be spoken in only seconds. I personally hate having monsters in the box text, however...

D&D General Sandbox style: Rumors say a +1 sword is in a cave nearby. Go get it?

Absolutely. It's an obvious plot hook , with a clearly defined reward. While you may consider it "just a +1 sword," there are a lot lamer rewards to be found. Besides, not everywhere is going to have treasure, unless the DM is using the same encounters and treasure regardless of the party's...

D&D 5E (2014) What is your go to Concentration spell?

Personally, I'm a fan of concentration spells that allow for repeat damage, such as Spirit Guardians and Flaming Sphere. Control spells like Hypnotic Pattern and Banishment are also pretty solid, but I'm not a fan of those with repeating saves, because IME they don't last long enough to be worth it.

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

I feel all cantrips, not just utility cantrips, should be limited per day. Of course, I also feel that increasing cantrip damage was a bad idea too.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the Deal with the Twilight Cleric?

Currently dealing with a Twilight Cleric in my Eve of Ruin campaign. Twilight Sanctuary basically makes mobs of monsters irrelevant, because they just can't overcome the amount of temporary HP granted every single round. Additionally, the temp HP don't go away after the effect ends, so even...
