D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

The problem with Shield is that it never scales and is always relevant. Listing it as +3 AC instead, with a +1 per slot level above 1, would balance it out IMO.

D&D 5E (2024) To Capitalize or not to capitalize

I tend to capitalize mechanics to emphasize they're mechanics, not just "natural language."

D&D 5E (2024) Poll: How many species should OneD&D include in its PHB?

The average in the past has been about 6-8, but with 12 classes, I'd like to see a similar number of races. This would give a huge variety of options right out the gate.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranking the Weapon Mastery

Obviously it's situational when it comes up, but you'll use it every time you can. It's similar to Nick in the this regard, which I only rated lower because TWF is generally weaker. How is this "spreading damage?" You are doing the same amount of damage to the original target while dealing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is character creation at higher levels quick/easy or slow/complex?

Slightly more complicated than AD&D, but much simpler than either 3E or 4E.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranking the Weapon Mastery

I'm sure people have preferences, but from a power level how do people feel about the different mastery options? My rankings below. Top Tier - always use when available Vex - this is too good IMO, since it creates a cascade, where each hit increases the chance of another hit. Cleave - a "free"...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

This is twice now I've been misquoted. I specifically said "non-magical treasure," which is the topic of the OP. I said nothing about magic items. For those not following, this is my quote below (emphasis added).

    D&D 5E (2024) The sorcerer shouldn't exist

If I was looking at cutting classes, Sorcerer would definitely be on the list. It either needs its own unique niche (like their first version in the D&D Next Playtest), or they need to be absorbed by the wizard and/or warlock. I'm fine with either, but just being the "innate casting wizard"...

D&D General The Hidden Stress of D&D

IME most DMs torment themselves needlessly. We always expect perfection from ourselves, never quite achieving an acceptable level... no matter how awesome the game actually goes. I've been a DM/GM for over 30 years, with dozens of successful campaigns to my name, yet I still feel dread and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rest Variants (DMG pg. 267)

I haven't used the Gritty system, but I plan to for my next campaign. The one change I'm going to make is that a Long Rest is either 3 days of complete rest or during 1 week of downtime. This way a traveling party can choose to make a stop somewhere for a few days, rather than taking a full week.

    D&D 5E (2024) 4/26 Playtest: Hide Action

I pointed this out on the last playtest packet, and it's worth noting the change was not in the survey. Either they've decided to get rid of it already, forgetting to delete it on this packet, or they've decided to keep it regardless of player opinion. I'm really hoping it's the former!

D&D General The Problem with Individual Initiative

Simply add Delay back into the game. It's not game breaking in any way, so long as you use the 4E rules for "start/end of your next turn." You resolve each bad guy individually. One has to finish his turn before doing the next, preventing any shenanigans. If you only have 1 group of opponents...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

I haven't in a few years, but in my first campaign I had about half a dozen or so encounters begin at long range (300+ Ft). Usually the players spent a few rounds casting Bless and other pre-combat spells before significant engagement. The archer PC would pepper the oncoming enemy since he had...

D&D 5E (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

I love the concept, but I'm not married to the execution. I feel it will need significant playtesting to make sure it works correctly. Already people have ranked the different abilities, pushing people towards the "optimal" weapon choice. One thing that I expect to happen (assuming this version...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

600 feet is in fact the historical lethal range of the longbow. The problem isn't the fact that this range exists, but that 5E doesn't impose further penalty after short range. The longbow had the same range in 3E without significant problems because at the max range suffered a greater penalty...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

"Default" meaning the games rules don't assume you have one. In the combat section of the PHB it refers to the Variant: Playing on a Grid.

D&D General What is your favorite class(es), and what about makes them so fun?

My favorite class is magic-user/mage/wizard. I've always liked the concept of a powerful caster that has to work extra hard to reach great power. While this hasn't really held true after AD&D, I still find it to be the most enjoyable class. My second favorite class is also my first: the...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

My experience has been the opposite. Unless you're ambushed and surrounded, we usually have the players starting on one side of the map, with the enemy on the other side.

D&D General How many encounter do you complete before getting a Rest?

Depends on the adventure specifics, but I shoot for 4-5 as my minimum. Sometimes you have only 1-2, but that's pretty rare, usually involving a big fight or massive solo opponent. In a dungeon environment, I often get up to 10 encounters before a long rest. My issue with Encounters per Long...

D&D General How many Short Rests do you routinely take?

Depends on the group and campaign. In general, if we have a Warlock or Monk in the party we tend to take more short rests, usually 2 per long rest. If we have a Fighter, Cleric, or Druid (who get moderate benefits from a short rest) we usually have 1 per long rest. If we don't have any of those...
