D&D General Your Character Died! Who's Fault Was It?

While luck does play a factor, as a player I want to put the odds as highly in my favor as possible. If I die, then obviously I didn't do that, or I should've run.

D&D General Who was your first character, and do you still play them?

My first character was a 1E Paladin, but I don't recall much about him. He didn't have much of a personality, and I only completed a few adventures before I died at the hands of my IRL brother. My first experience with the game was watching the cartoon at 6 AM on Saturday morning. Drove my...

D&D General How Do You Run Travel and Exploration In Your Games?

Depends on the adventure. If exploration is a primary aspect of the adventure, then I run it by the book. If it's just about getting from point A to point B, then I tend to ignore it. For my next campaign, I'm looking into using the travel rules from LotR 5E.

Mainstream News Discovers D&D's Species Terminology Change

My only irk with the change was that "species" comes off as too scientific/sci-fi for my tastes. Ancestry makes the most sense to me, but I'd also have been cool with Kin, People, etc.

D&D General 5 types of DM styles

I'm probably a 4.5, since while I don't go out of my way to kill characters anymore, I do enjoy tallying my kills over the course of a campaign. My challenges are tough, and I don't hold back during combat, even though I let the dice do the talking.

D&D 5E (2014) Update: My Local Library has approved my DnD club

Awesome! Hope it all goes well

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimizing for more grit…

It was an old character, so I don't remember the details, but you're totally right

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimizing for more grit…

For a grittier game, I'm all in on limiting cantrips. Either limit them per day, or require a check each time you use them, with a failed check removing it as an option until after a long rest.

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

Also running Vecna, and I generally agree. They seem to be using the alternate encounter creation guidelines from Xanthars set to a 5 player party. However, most monsters hit below their CR, and higher level monsters are even worse in this regard. I've had to bump up the number of enemies...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimizing for more grit…

I honestly leave it to the players to track. When I'm a player, I just make sure to mark where everything is. Here's an example from my last character: Carried Equipment (50/100/150 – 140.5 lbs.) Worn/Carried (29 lb): Studded Leather Armor (10 lb), Component Pouch (2 lb), Fine Clothes (6 lb)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimizing for more grit…

Some things I've used in the past to varying degrees of success: Healer's Kits no longer have an ability attached. They're used with the Medicine skill to stabilize, spending one use per success. This makes the Medicine skill more useful and prevents auto-stabilizing without magic. Death Saves...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

Both have their purpose, creating a certain style of play. I used to be a "behind the screen" DM, but after killing the same player 3 times in 5 sessions (all due to crits), I started rolling combat in the open. As a player, I'm a fan of open rolls, because I don't want the DM to fudge, either...

D&D General What makes for good antagonists?

The best villains are ones the players hate! It can be as simple as doing bad things to children/animals (which always riles people up), or it can be personal, depending on the level of evil your group is comfortable with. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be evil, but simple rivalry/antagonism...

D&D General 5e Wands with finite charges?

I generally prefer them that way. The only change is to limit the number of charges that can be spent per use. I typically limit it to the normal maximum charges, but sometimes I limit it to just 1.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Ranking

I couldn't pick a fourth. I got the big three, because Animal Handling and Performance are too niche, and Medicine is largely unnecessary due to Healer's Kit. I forgot that in 2014 you only use Thieves Tools for traps, rather than Sleight of Hand, or I'd have added it as my fourth.

    D&D General Let's celebrate D&D having things we don't like! (+)

Revivify, because death should be nothing more than a speed bump.

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

I see Good, Evil, Law, and Chaos as fundamental forces of the universe, which is why the outer planes are based on them. In addition, there's varying degrees of each, such as "evil," "Evil," and "EVIL." A goblin raider is evil because it does evil things (pillage, murder, etc.), not because of...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

While I'm one of those who disagree with your premise, specifically your description of good and evil, I'll play along. In a nutshell, good needs evil. First of all, good has no definition without evil to compare it to. Secondly, life would stagnate without the threat of evil (those who've...

D&D General Greyhawk: Spy v. Spy

A gnome from the Valley of the Mage spreading tales about the "fabulous wealth" that can be found there, but is really looking to send more adventurers to their doom. An agent of the Circle of Eight. They're observing the current situation between Ket and Bissel, but are also aware of other...
