Pondering RE: Monte Cook / Long-term roadmaps for both Wizards and Paizo

I know basically nothing about WotC's long term road map for 4e. They may or may not have said something about it. I don't read most of the news/editiorial stuff. My enthusiasm for 4e is based on what I already have, and the many things I could do with it, not on products that have yet to hit...

Attention Paladin, Monk, Cleric, Druid and Other Players!

Huh. I always thought that the Cleric should, if we're doing restrictions, be more restricted, since he is getting more power from his god than the paladin is. The paladin always has a strong sword arm to fall back on, but regardless of later-e clerics getting sword, non-magical melee was...

    Monte Cook back at wizards

I poked around the net a little to see if I could find anything on Monte's thoughts on 4e(pre-return to WotC, natch), but while I found a lot of talking about Monte not liking 4e, the only thing I could find that he has actually said was a bit on his blog where he mentioned not liking the...

Attention Paladin, Monk, Cleric, Druid and Other Players!

This was definitely the case in 1e, that paladins were stronger. Still, I don't like it as a balancer, because it rests so heavily on the DM. A Dm who wants to can make sure the code is never even a consideration for a paladin, or he can make it so that the paladin is just screwed. Most DMs...

    Monte Cook back at wizards

I think that was more to do with the timing, than the system. The climate in the hobby is a lot different now, so what worked then may not work now. My mileage varies. I found minis a requirement with 3e, and my 4e experience has been a lot more like my AD&D experience than the 3e days were. I...

    Monte Cook back at wizards

I dunno, it seems to me that a lot of things have sounded like 5e is on the way. it's a standard thing to hear whenever there's any staff change at WotC. Mainly I just hope Monte's writing is good. He's been a big force behind things I really don't like in my gaming, but WotC's recent...

Should a DM buy the player splats?

There's a big difference between "No, you can't use Jim's book." and "No, I will not go out and buy you a book."

Should a DM buy the player splats?

For those people, a DM need not make available any more than the core rulebook.

    Favorite pieces of fantasy art.

Using this one as a character portrait over in L4W. I tend to enjoy Wayne Reynolds as well. More as I think of them.

Should a DM buy the player splats?

I buy a decent amount of player splats because I also play, but my rule as a DM is that if you want something from a splat I don't have, you have to make it available to me before you can use it. I'm not really worried about it being broken, if I have it.

Koukonsögur - Saga of the Trollfed Aerie - IC

Satoshi steps off the boat, and advances on the goblin chieftain. As he does, he removes his hat, baring his bald head. A stray ray of sunlight shines off of his dark blue skin. Satoshi begins gathering his divine wrath, moonlight shining in his eyes and his voice taking on the tone of a peal...

WotC's hesitation on tackling the feat tax.

Mathwise, it works, though you have to increase treasure parcels a bit to get them. The main reason I wouldn't use it is that it increases PC reliance on magic items even more. One thing the designers were trying to prune down was the "Christmas Tree" effect, which I agree with.

You can hold it in, or you can take a level of ninja. One or the other.

    Bad DMs/GMs

I led one, too, but it was more of a dethroning. The group stayed together, we just crowned a new DM. It was a whole table of people standing up(for dramatic effect, probably) and saying, "No, Jake*, you do not get to DM anymore!" *name change, again.

Attention Paladin, Monk, Cleric, Druid and Other Players!

I take the second(though I could take or leave the parenthetical explanation). A couple reasons spring to mind. 1) Players: IME, a player who wants to roleplay a Paladin(or other restricted class) is going to do so, or at the least, try their best to do so, with or without fall mechanics. A...

    Bad DMs/GMs

I'm sure that I have my DMing flaws as well, theory is always cleaner than execution, but to put things in perspective, maybe 80-90% of the Bad DM stories I tell here are all the same DM. We played with him for nearly 5 years, because no one else was willing to try(except occasionally me). We...

    [IC] WD's Dragonfist

During the first short rest the party takes, Song clasps his hands together and concentrates for a moment, redirecting his ki flow to the injuries he has sustained. Under the shaman's mystic instruction, the flesh begins to sew itself shut. Blood of the Dragon MA. Song regains 6hp

    Bad DMs/GMs

I didn't have a timer out or anything, but the entire group was bored until the dragon was mentioned(at which point shock took over). There's a point at which description simply becomes pointless and boring, and this DM tended to cross the line and then just keep going. I know that sting too...

It depends. That is a potentially risky venture, not to be attempted by those with average or lower Charisma.
