    Fighter Powers, and Magic Items

Ok, so know there is a group that doesn't like 4e style fighter powers. A common thought is they feel to magic like... So why not roll with that in 5e? Link the powers idea to magic items, and give rules for either using them as powers attached to magic items, or just as fighter maneuvers-...

Time to bring back the prose?

Two books? One is a sit and read the book of D&D rules, and the other an at the table reference book stripped of all color and flavor.

Fewer deeper archetypes or the kitchen sink

I want them to be based on our collective unconscious basically. I want archetypes to be actual archetypes.

Fewer deeper archetypes or the kitchen sink

Because we are in the real world. :P I don't need archetypes that can't do fantasy stuff. I just want them to be based on stories and myths in our world. It gives them a more solid "archetype" footing, then something just completely generated by putting together game elements.

Fewer deeper archetypes or the kitchen sink

As I said I'm not looking for a 1 to 1 translation. But if you take those basic concepts, you start seeing people like Mosses, the Grail Knights, Greek and Egyptian style clergy, Norse Tribal Leaders, etc... And they all add up to the archetype of what a Cleric springs from. Is it D&D'd up a...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog "Avoiding Choice Traps"

I think it might be better to just curtail feats into a smaller roll. IE they add smaller functions like the ability to use a sword, or armor without a penalty, but no added powers, or attack types.

Fewer deeper archetypes or the kitchen sink

No, clerics have a basis in real world legends. Like above I don't want a 1 to 1 match, just a basis. I personally feel it makes a much stronger feeling class since we can tap into all of the stories and legends.

That's not what I mean though- I don't care how people want to play their character. But when designing a class, design based on the "essentialness" of something. You don't have to base a barbarian on conan, but base it on the essential common traits of "the barbarians" of our legends.

Time to bring back the prose?

Why not just make it a book of artwork depicting the rules, interspersed with the occasional haiku?

One thing I DO think is important is where the inspiration for the achetype comes from. I'd much rather have a class/concept based on actual mythology/stories then completely designed just to fill some sort of game purpose.

Time to bring back the prose?

Can someone give an example of rules text other then spells vrs powers? I'm trying to figure out what the difference is in the majority of rules in the system, or if it really is just things like spells and powers should have more descriptive elements.

Time to bring back the prose?

So is it just spells vrs powers? Or are we talking about other rules like combat and what strength is as well? (From my own point of view, I can understand about spell description... but the strength example... I don't really find anything about the 1e example that is particularly better for...

Rule of the Three (1st of May)

Yeah average was probably a bad word. Median would probably have been better- basically what you said. Ok now I think I'm following where you're going here. Essentially you want themes to be an easier way for non min/maxers to be able to keep somewhat up to speed with the min/maxers? My...

Rule of the Three (1st of May)

So now this makes more sense. You're asking for the pre-built "theme concept" to be more powerful from the start then a character built with just a collection of feats? IE if they decide that an average feat built character would be say 50 amps... (just choosing a word here) you'd want the...

Time to bring back the prose?

That's an interesting idea... The best way to make a modular game is to make one that only gives you a vague idea of how to actually play it? :P

Time to bring back the prose?

But I'm not sure it was... I mean it might have ended up that way for some, but again sometimes it feels like he was just writing whatever came to his mind at the time. IE I feel like you could intersperse most of the sentences with "Oh yeah-" and "Oh and" and "Oh oh how about-" This is not to...

Rule of the Three (1st of May)

Maybe I'm reading it wrong. I took it to mean anyone who chooses stuff from the first set, will always make a character who isn't better then someone who makes a character from the second set... which isn't true. There are people who are sucky at making characters just like there are min maxers...
