How do you expect high level play to differ from low level play in a high fantasy RPG?

I expect turns to take longer. I expect a lot of forgetting what abilities are effecting what because there are so many ongoing effects in play. I expect save or die scenarios at the beginning of every fight. I expect that only one or two people in the party can get through the defensive of the...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Make every room be useful is not needed. Having a few dead rooms with nothing of interest is okay as it can ratchet up the tension if used properly. Say there are four small rooms that are symmetrical and one out of the four has a trap in it! It is a good way to catch the party off guard.

Worlds of Design: Which Came First, the Character or Their Backstory?

I always felt one of the strengths of Pathfinder's setting-tied traits and archetype system was that it built in some assumptions about your characters history, especially when playing an adventure path. You can make all those choices from a purely min-max perspective but that could give you an...

RPG Print News – Cubicle 7, Legendary Games, and More

I bought the Star Wars set a while back. Still haven't played it of course. I wish they had re-released the second edition which had more specific rules.

Worlds of Design: Death from Above

If the ships are the only thing that can fly it is a problem. With dragons, griffon riders, space whales and whatever else it is less of a problem. The players also wont abuse it if they have a clear narrative goal. I only see flying as a problem in the classic sense of how you deal with it in...

Worlds of Design: Write it Down!

All my stuff is done in onenote online now. Been doing that for a number of years now. Very handy. I have a sort of default format notebook I start out with and then build from there. I wrote a lil blog post about it once: OneNote for Game Night Edit: This is just in the context of GMing and...

Roll20's Latest Numbers: Cthulhu Holding Strong!

I have been a Roll20 user for a long time, I think since beta. My tables have been using Roll20 exclusivley for the last year for obvious reasons. I was able to get some people together, outdoors, to play a miniature table top game (Rangers of Shadow Deep) for the first time in a year and oh...

Worlds of Design: Game Design Rules of Thumb - Part 1

I would be very interested in actual rules of game design rather than rules about being a game designer. I understand the two are inexorably linked but I have never written anything for money and could care less about the business side of things for myself. I just would like to see advice on...

Is The One Ring 2E Kickstarter going to break the records?

Thid game needs an online group like many wargames have. Seems to be a lot of people saying that had 1e and never got to use it.

I too enjoy these articles and reading these old issues. The Bazaar of the Bizarre in these are still very useful today for bringing unique magic items into your game...any game really.

Check Out The One Ring 2E's Pre-Kickstarter Video!

I have gotten a number of the 1e books and have never been able to play. Would that I could. In what way is it less fun than MERP, which I have also never played. I would very much like to know. I have no aversion to using an old system if it is more enjoyable. I do feel sometimes these gorgeous...

Would love some new comics. The Dragonlance and Starjammer comics were the best parts of the TSR/DC partnership. IMO.

    Dragon Reflections #38

I feel as though the wargamming and rpg were more closely related back then. Many RPGs amounting to an elaborate war game. Some still are just that.
