The Warhammer Fantasy Role Play Starter Set Is A Great Gateway Into A Grim Game

Curious if anyone else has moved over to using Zweihander from 4e to run things like Enemy Within.

    Dragon Reflections #34

These old issues a fount of inspiration. I just used a magic item from the Bazaar of the Bizarre inside issue #188 for my 3.5 game and stumbled upon a short story The Wizards Three by none other than Ed Greenwood. I often scan through old letter columns in comics and magazines. Just to see what...

News Digest for the Week of October 9

The question at hand is, are there good novels (beyond the original Dragonlance stuff, which I feel is roundly well regarded) in any D&D settings? There were a few good Pathfinder novels. Plague of Shadows was enjoyable and had some original ideas. Every time I try to pick up a Forgotten Realms...

News Digest for the Week of October 9

I have never gotten on with R.A. Salvatore. It is unfortunate because he has written so many books for D&D. When I go into a used book store and hunt down the bottom shelf where they shove all the licensed novels (Star Trek, Warhammer etc) I almost always find a shelf almost solely dedicated to...

    The Horror! of Labyrinths

I made a Pathfinder adventure based on the movie the Labyrinth. I decided to gamify solving it rather than have them do it square by square. I made a hex map where they had to advance through the different sections of the Labyrinth, like how the movie had different sections, some being longer...

WotC crosses a line - Walking Dead are MtG Tournament Playable (5e next?)

This makes me cringe. And I haven't played MTG in like, a decade at least.

    D&D 5E (2014) 3 Classic Settings Coming To 5E?

I would be surprised if it were Dragonlance as I do not think they have the rights to it. Might be wrong about that and would happy to hear it were not true. Edit: Quick google says Margaret Weiss owns it. Does not mean WotC does not have some form of rights to produce material though.

A BATMAN RPG Has Just Been Announced

I agree. D20 and super heroes are square peg round hole to me.

    Worlds of Design: Escaping Tolkien

Nothing is all that fantastic in D&D settings and that is the difference between LotR and most RPG fantasy settings. The Elves were strange and wonderful to the Hobbits when they first met them. LotR is "low fantasy" in a lot of ways and I feel such a settings is less commonly played. A...

D&D General What would a deity feel when followers pray to it?

Sort of sounds like the Grand Inquisitor in Brothers Karamazov type situation.

D&D General What would a deity feel when followers pray to it?

American Gods or Niel Gaiman's work in general often tackles this subject. Gods could derive power from their worshipers and likewise fade away or disappear from their being little to no reverence for them. On the other hand there is the Malazaan approach where the gods are mostly indifferent...

    Lessons Learned from Virtual Gaming

Biggest hurtle has been player retention. People are more likely to flake. The other big thing is audio quality, get a better headset, mute yourself when not talking, don't have the tv on or other background noise. For some people this is not possible but I think every attempt should be made.

GMing: What Keeps Long Running Campaigns Exciting?

I found more simple RPGs work less for long campaigns. Less options for the characters seem to make things a little stale. Learend that leson with a game that is still really great. In Darkest Warrens.

GMing: What Keeps Long Running Campaigns Exciting?

My sandbox game has made it to level 10 now. The way I keep things interesting is constantly introducing new threads every session. While this has allowed them to abandon certain quests and slowed them down from time to time it makes the world seem richer. I also keep track of what they have let...

Worlds of Design: When Technology Changes the Game

Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is a great examination of magic being introduced to the real world. Whether a technology is developed for military use first or not, things tend to end up on the battlefield anyway. During WWI the car was a new and novel thing, and while the car itself was not...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D re-skinned as a Superhero game?

Oh its been done. Use the filters in drivethrurpg and I am sure you will find things. My opinion, d20 rules are not the best fit for super heroes. There are plenty of other games that do it better.
