What was the reason for the Demon/Devil split?

They're based off of Tolkien elves, as opposed to purely folklore faeries. Tolkien was quite popular at the time. Because they were based off of the popular TV show "Kung Fu", and other such media influences, because that was popular in the 70s when D&D was being created. The same thing with...

What was the reason for the Demon/Devil split?

Well. From what I understand, "Demon" is just "Fallen angel", "evil spirit" or basically "Inhabitant of Hell" and "Devil" has only been used to refer to the individual in charge of hell: Satan, Lucifer, etc. D&D is the only place I've ever seen "Devil" used to refer to anything outside of...

    DMG Content/Advice Wish List

A lot has been said about rules, options for this or that. But the ol' DMG is getting quite neglected. Here I'd like to talk about stuff that we'd like to see go into the DMG, or stuff that's already there needing more ink spent on it. Personally I'm less concerned about crunchy rules, and...

What is the typical party size in practice?

I would prefer the game be built to assume 4 players. I would really prefer it if they took into mind while designing that it should operate from 1-6 players without ludicrous adjustments. At least addressing these issues in the DMG woul dbe nice.

Mike Mearls Answers Questions About "Dungeons and Dragons Next"

The issue I have with the Red Box is not the adventure or anything like that. It's that it doesn't really help educate people on making a character or really deal with the rules well. It also only goes to level 2. I just don't think it's a good primer on how to do things. I think it's legit to...

D&D 4E Hacking 4e - Do you hack? Why did you hack?

What do you do about the unmotivated player? The casual "I just want to show up and roll dice and kill some orcs" players? Because let me tell you. I love having motivated players who want to accomplish certain things, but getting D&D players to set goals and pursue them is hard as hell. :p

I'm sorry, your character is too good

I personally feel it's far more constructive to address any problem with the player, away from the table, than try to deal with it in-game. It leads to less arms-races, less derailment and potential loss of fun for everyone, and avoids potential miscommunication/mixed messages. Also it's faster...

What was the reason for the Demon/Devil split?

D&D is the only thing I've ever encountered that has specifically Demons and Devils. Why did Gygax have them categorized separately?

Raven Queen Cleric - Roleplay Problem

Yes, you have it right: Adventure: We go to clean out this dungeon. Campaign: We go clean out this dungeon, then take the kidnapped princess back to her father, then go to slay the dragon, and then take out the guy who was behind it all. Then we stop playing those characters. I like #6 a lot.

Monsters of Legend and the First Monster Manual

Not only that, but D&D typically takes "The Legendary" out of monsters. I.e. there are minotaurs and medusas, not The Minotaur, The Medusa. The only "This is the only monster of its kind" is the Tarrasque, and the Named Demon Lords/Prices of Hell. As suggested, the best idea would just be an...

Mike Mearls Answers Questions About "Dungeons and Dragons Next"

It's a success, really? Because, and I say this as a f4nboy, the 4e Red Box is a lousy product. I really hope that is not how WotC is defining a "good intro product".

Looking for gay writers and designer for podcast interview.

@Bullgrit I don't want to put words in the mouth of @Leviatham but... The OP links to a previous episode where he did the same thing for women designers/writers. So I think not about content made by those authors, but it's just drawing attention to a minority, acknowledging them and showing...

I'm sorry, your character is too good

Let's say that a player comes in, drops a character sheet in front of you, the DM. You look it over, and the sheet is min/maxed to the hilt. We're talking the guy has 8s in all his other ability scores. He's contorted and twisted the system to 1) be above and beyond the other PCs in capability...

D&D 4E Hacking 4e - Do you hack? Why did you hack?

LostSoul, that's not a bad idea. Like PrC entrance requirements with RP requirements. However, what about vanilla "Just be better at ass kicking" Paragon Paths, like say, the Daggermaster?

    Share Something Cool

Just stumbled across Make your own Mythos, a website with tutorials on making your own gaming props. It is aimed at Cthulu-style stuff, but there's help on how to make your own ancient books, statues, and such. Other things which easily could be used for arcane whatsits, not just Old Ones whatsits.

D&D 4E Hacking 4e - Do you hack? Why did you hack?

@Vadriar I'm more concerned with people who'd rather play more flavorful things but feel trapped by the system. I.e. feeling like they have to take expertise instead of something they'd rather take. I feel this way when I play. Charoppers will always find a way to game the system, and I can...

D&D 4E Hacking 4e - Do you hack? Why did you hack?

Sadly the campaign I implemented it in didn't last long. :p Also, players still went with optimized race/class combos. The more recent table I built up had increased it. Honestly, take a look at the link I provided, it handles it much easier; the bonuses are comparable to typical bonuses by...

Heroes of the Elemental Chaos Excerpts

So new excerpt's up, this time it's themes: Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Character Themes) Sadly they don't list all the themes. There will be 10. They show one, genie-slaves.
