D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

One way to do that is to have all trolls regenerate at the end of the round, instead of on their turn. So at Init 0, all trolls get x HP unless they took fire/acid. Make PCs responsible for remembering which trolls took fire. I highly recommend this suggestion (lurkers being my favorite...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

Has any game handled Epic well? Doesn't every edition break down after a certain level, due to the various math and abilities?

    D&D 5E (2014) D&DNext - Frankenstein or Butterfly?

What we're seeing is the sausage being made. The problem is that it's a good way to turn people off from the sausage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

The Upside to Irrationality: the Unexpected benefits of defying logic at work and home by Dan Ariely. Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. Here's a free ebook with chapter samples from both of the above books. The (Honest) Truth about Dishonesty: How we Lie to Everone, Especially ourselves...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

All I will say on the issue of competence vs. success is that Paizo is a much, much smaller company than WotC. Just for the sake of argument, let's say Paizo and WotC sold the same amount of books. For Paizo it's a success because the profit margin pays for the investment of the books, and...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

Yeah, the issue of Solos is 'OK everyone throw your dailies, ok it's Dazed/Immobilized/Blinded, beat it over the head". Of course, this isn't far from earlier editions. I'm sure everyone here has heard stories of "We geared up for the big fight, and in the first round the BBEG failed his Save...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

@CroBob , I've emphasized what I think the problem is: Humans Are Not Rational. Due to our brains wiring, to our emotions, to the limits of our perceptions, we are very very flawed. Most of our decisions are ruled by irrational and subconscious forces. We only think we're making our own...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

Yes. I think it is superficial and yet, apparently it was a very common complaint. Feel is very important, and for a lot of people the classes felt samey. In another thread, several posters were saying that minor-action healing didn't feel heroic; not devoting a standard action cheapened...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

Huh? Please explain. What is superficial? Anyways, my ideal class system would be something like ability purchasing. A CLASS is 3 things: Class Features + Combat Role + Non-Combat Role. Your combat role is self-explanatory. It has a class feature that lets you do your thing (defending...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

I'm not going to put words into @Remathilis 's mouth, but I'll take a stab: It may seem like semantics, but it's not. Some people want each class to be Different with a capital D. That, unless it uses its own subsystem, or has strong unique abilities, then it's not a separate class. Take a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many cooks (a DnDN retrospective)

This. A great example of this is 4e Essentials. There are apparently quite a number of 4e DMs who say "No essentials". Which makes no sense; 4e Essentials are just different builds for classes, most of which are for people who don't like the AEDU framework. The objection is never "They're...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

Even as someone looking to run another 4e game, I generally don't use skill challenges, and I personally don't hand out a lot of magical items. Changing the math formula so that each person may get 2 items eventually, but each item has multi-purposes. :)

    'Dropping Total HP' Houserule

Awhile ago I had this idea to make things more lethal: Forget failing 3 death saves: you get 1. If you fail it, you die. If you pass it but don't hit 20, you roll again next round. If you take damage while you're unconscious, you die. Every time you have been rendered unconscious, you receive...

Ah, so we WERE playing different games; aside from a couple of one-shots, I never got to play 2e. :)

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

Wow, I... wow. That just blew my mind. I think that's more a Player problem than anything. Only the most reckless of players IMO would just say "screw it we are tougher than you, you'll do what we say". Usually I'd expel someone from a group because they think torture and bullying are the ways...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

This is probably really late in the conversation but: If you want to simulate a situation where the sentries/guards run and alert the people in the next room, there's an easy way to do this without resorting to Skill Challenges. Build an encounter where not every enemy is in the same room. The...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

Were we playing different games entirely? Combat in 3e took forever too. It's just that each round took longer. A combat could be 3 rounds, but it takes about an hour for everything to resolve. 4e combat can take an hour, but it's just more rounds. It was a rare combat I played in where minis...
