D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

There's more you can do to address this. The Rest mechanic can be fiddled with, like any element in D&D. For instance, the rest mechanic simulates a day. The extended rest is "bedding down for the night", so to speak. But you could say, "For this adventure, you can't get the benefits of an...

D&D 5E (2014) Warforged, Changelings, and Thri Kreen in the PHB?

As if allowing Dragonborn and Tieflings and Eladrin aren't going to cause the same kinds of complaints to begin with. ;) I've seen lovely ways for Warforged to be put in FR and Dark Sun. Dark Sun: Warforged made of stone and bone. The created warriors of a Sorcerer King, an unrelenting force...

D&D 5E (2014) Warforged, Changelings, and Thri Kreen in the PHB?

I was mostly being sarcastic, hence the winky face. But the point being that anything can be garbage to someone (like myself who loathes the core races), AND that "If you don't want that stuff in your game, say no" because someone who has to have a human-only game is going to have to say no a...

so how often do you go above 10th level?

The only time I ever played above 10th level, it was 2 sessions when I joined a 12th level game. That's it. I've only been a part of 1 game where the PCs reached 10th level. Another made it to 9. Everything else ended before that.

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

I totally forgot about the cinematic element, and the "Exception based design". This is me, hearting that.

Ten Ways to Make Treasure Cool

I think the opposite; if you don't allow magic items to be purchasable, money becomes useless. Because 99% of what is listed as purchasable is magical items. There's very little detail put into what else you can buy (and by 5th level, you can buy pretty much anything that has been listed). The...

    D&D 5E (2014) Maybe I'm just tired?

And player. I for instance always held my resources til at least mid-way through the fight, for several reasons. 1) It's not always clear who the nastiest threat is at first, or what they can do. Because of various status effects, you want to save those for when they're useful. 2) Various...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

@Manbearcat At this point we're getting threadjacky. All I'll say is that it's not a Concern. It's just a Dislike. Call it philosophical disagreement. I just Dislike that the average fight, the PCs are assured victory and blow through it. If it's assured, then why bother play it out? Playing it...

    A question of Hexcrawling/Exploration

If visibility was so clear for miles in a forest, then it would be much harder to get lost in them.

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

I'm aware that I can, and my standard encounters higher level than the players. My point is that I wish that was the default baseline, not above. As people below me have pointed, a level appropriate monster is weaker than the same level PC, even if they are treated as equals in terms of...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

On the other end of the spectrum, you have to consider your group. If you have two hybrid classed PCs, no real capable leaders, poorly built PCs or some players are just not good at using their abilities well, then an average encounter can become harder and more tedious. The thing I don't like...

Unless the healer ends up in the middle of three enemies in the first round. :p

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

For me it's easier to access the threat level or encounter difficulty; XP budgets are easier for me to grasp than 3e's CR/EL system, which was very much more of an art than a science. Furthermore, the XP budget helps track. The same XP budget can translate to different things (an elite 7th...

Morrus how did you make that map? That is great.

There's an extensive discussion of that in the later part of the "Is that it for 4e" thread.

D&D 5E (2014) Warforged, Changelings, and Thri Kreen in the PHB?

I know! The only race in there should be human. That way, I don't have to rip out all the rest of the garbage. ;)

So that's it for 4th edition I guess?

Hell, only reason I'm back on these forums is to put together another 4e campaign. :) I'm vexed we never got a full Fey monster book (like the Undead and Dragons and Demons) or Feywild focused book (like what the SHadowfell/Astral Sea/Elemental Chaos got) but, aside from that (and builds I...

    D&D 4E Viability of a flatter math 4e campaign?

General question: do you guys feel that "flatter math" is important if you never play past heroic tier? It seems that the primary complaint is that enemies aren't scary in paragon/epic. Or that it doesn't fit verisimilitude. If one doesn't play past heroic, or worry about verisimilitude, would...

    A question of Hexcrawling/Exploration

Thank you for your post, @JustinAlexander however: Each hex represents such a small area because the geography is dense jungle. This means that travel is very slow. I'd prefer the PCs not spend the most of a day traveling from one hex to the other. The area is dense jungle, hence visibility...

How do I run a campaign like this?

Sadly that's not for me. Actually 4e is overbalanced if anything. With 4e I can design an adventure for 1 PC. I just need to know in advance what their class is, so that monster roles can be adjusted. With 2 PCs it's easier; back when 4e first came out, I ran a game for about about 9 months...
