D&D 5E (2014) Advice for playing with a large group

Identifying player types will go a long way: players in it just for socialization and having fun players who like to roleplay players who need a break from reality (escapism) players who love the tactical side and is meh about everything else Etc. When you have seven players, having a...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

In the current module on Indiegogo, there aren't any backgrounds, as it's only a 32-page book dedicated to the adventure, lots of maps, and monsters. We designed the module to be, um, modular, so there isn't campaign-specific lore beyond a single page of information the DM can use if they don't...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

Yeah, I probably should have been more verbose in that article. The campaign setting they show up in is--challenging. And some of the players objected to the standard backgrounds on the grounds they were not that roleplay-ish, and a bit frou-frou given the gritty rules optional rules they play...

D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post: The Misunderstood World of 5E Game Balance, Part 2

Fifth Edition D&D contains mechanics that beneath the surface cause the game to stagnate, and also lacks practical guidance outside of combat concerning player dynamics. We won’t be the first person to write about this and offer solutions, and we won’t be the last—but here's our take. The...

D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post: The Misunderstood World of 5E Game Balance, Part 1

"Nobody is going to high-five a balanced encounter. They’ll high-five after crawling out of a spike-filled pit with a bunch of poisonous snakes. And they have to crawl through a gelatinous cube. And the trap door over the pit is a mimic. And the snakes are on fire." Available here: The...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

Just the first book. The second book is in progress. We had to retool how we operate. We thought that customers wanted the campaign setting, so we finished that book, but it didn't fare well for various reasons on Kickstarter. However, we have a new production pipeline. CC2 will be a much...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

I made a background where the PC only gets a sewing kit, 100 PP, and a wanted poster with their face on it for a crime they didn't commit. Have yet to figure out how to make other Backgrounds that work with it, but I have to say as a player I would be trapped in a circular thought pattern...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

Oh! The forward scout. Sorry, I was talking about the two sages. The forward scout sacrifices a tool proficiency/language for a precise skill list required by the campaign setting. A player can pick the Solider background and have a more traditional set of things that come with their character...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

Indeed. To me, the benefits of a DM designed or modified campaign setting is the ability to add backgrounds specific to the setting. I got all these sages: Sages from the Imperial University system Sages from the Royal University Elf sages Dwarf Sages Metaphysical Warlock/Witch Sages...

D&D 5E (2014) Three New 5E Backgrounds to Enhance Your New PC

I am not a fan of tools combined with a "non-tool" (toolless? sans tool) background. A blacksmith or herbalist background should stand on its own two feet, not combined with academic-focused backgrounds--but that's how I roll.
