We had non-evil drow cultures and enclaves for decades, WotC just chose to sideline and ignore them. And now they create brand new ones to adress the lack of non-evil drows. :unsure:

But drow are already an elven subrace, one of a large number of elven subrace. Making sub-subraces now? What's next? Aquatic drow (no, we're totally not Sea Elves) and maybe winged drow (no we're totally not Avariel).

Probably like they did during the Great Wheel Era, those are just divine realms that are located on one of the outer planes. With a pre-3e sourcebook we could even look up where exactly these places used to be located Only due to the two great wheels being counted separetely which I don't...

How do you define "until recently" the drow pantheon with Ellistrae, Vhaerun and the others has been around for decades. So not all were evil and not all worshipped spiders (even though most non-spider worshippers were still evil)
