    D&D 5E (2014) Epic Monsters: Karkaddan

D&D has a long history of "Greater Shedu", "Greater Lamassu" ,etc. so "Greater Unicorn" works too. At least this one isn't LG (nothing against LG, but NG and CG feel short changed in 5e).

Bahamut takes his name from a fish that does the same thing as the Diskworld turtle in real world mythologies.

    D&D General Alignment in D&D

But surely their cousin's best friend's sister's boy friend's favorite pizza delivery guy's anecdote about how alignment ruined his life and drove him from playing D&D to drinking Canadian beer must be super important, since they have been using it since Jimmy Carter was President.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon+ Magazine Issue 31 out now!

I don't know if every MtG world needs a D&D setting book, but if they made the Trappers Guide to the Beasts of Ikoria that was 80% monster manual (with mutation templates) and 20% setting book, I would be a happy camper.

D&D General Let's Share Our Alternate Lore

When a dragon gets itself a nice, big pile of treasure and a full belly, it tends to hibernate. When it wakes up, it may be a different kind of dragon. How or if it changes is (purposely) beyond mortal comprehension, with one exception: don't wake it up early, it will be evil and angry; a...

    D&D General Alignment in D&D

Back in the days when xp was gold, I figured lawful evil was a bad guy who would keep his/her word if you made a deal with them, neutral evil was a bad guy who would break his/her word when and if it was profitable to do so, and chaotic evil was a bad guy who would break his/her word as soon as...

D&D General Half Angel Half Demon

I remember seeing a picture of one (devil looking thing with angel wings), with some kind of balance assassin gimmick. What I can remember of the art makes me think 3e or 3.5 monster manuals, but that is as close as I can come.

D&D 5E (2014) Kara Tur vs Tarkir vs Kamigawa vs Plane of Mountains and Seas vs Ikoria

Eh, I think if Hasbro wants fantasy role playing games by Asians for Asians, they can partner with and/or buy out some Asian FRP game companies, and let them figure what parts of 5e are culturally transferrable and what new stuff would fit in. Sure that might take a couple of years (and some...

Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

Sword and sorcery fantasy often champions unconventional moralities, but they are moralities none the less. REH's Conan stories are about the hypocrisy of civilization (it would be hard to be more blatant about it than Red Nails). How often does Conan have to deal with a socially respectable...

D&D 5E (2014) How I would have done the Priest/Cleric class differently with Hindsight

I don't know how mechanically different this would end up, but for clerics, I would make them the weirdo running around the countryside looking for "signs", "the world as you know it is just an illusion" class. They have wisdom, but no great charisma, so it isn't like they are pulling people...

D&D 5E (2014) How I would have done the Priest/Cleric class differently with Hindsight

Thanks. Much like PF2's champions, I think only the "swear an oath to a celestial" subclasses would be paladins. I honestly don't know what to call it; it doesn't feel like a champion or crusader or warlock and "oathbound" might be a little too on the nose.

D&D 5E (2014) How I would have done the Priest/Cleric class differently with Hindsight

If I had been in charge of 5e, I think I would have combined the paladin and bladelock as an armored type like the paladin but with invocations like the warlock (and more of them.) No spell slots, but lots of "you can cast this spell at level X (goes up to Y at level Z). You can't do it again...

Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

While they might add a gimmick like the psychic dice, the business case for keeping 5e with as few systems as possible is very strong; one could even argue that a good part of 5e's success comes from its straightforwardness. Even if 100% of survey respondents swore that they wouldn't be happy...

Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

I seem to recall that the official rationale was that it would give them the opportunity to expand into different types of programming. As far as the business analysts were concerned it was a naked cost cutting measure. It also occurred when there was a change in leadership in the network...

D&D 5E (2014) What class levels have you given monsters in encounters, to give them that extra edge?

I regard bladelocks as the ideal class to add to monsters: a few spell slots, not many spells to remember, EB for ranged attacks, hex is a bonus action spell, never unarmed beyond a round.... That being said, I am more likely to give monsters a feat (usually alert or magic initiate warlock)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

I would be good with replacing the VSM components with the GBS components for psychics: G is for Grimace, B is for Bleeding out of your eyes, ears, or nose (doesn't affect vision, hearing, or smell or cause damage), and S is for Stink, as you have to smoke or drink some strange, hard to acquire...

Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

There are a couple of gimmicks that seem like good candidates for psychics: 1) Weaponize skills. It would be neat if when the psychic intimidated someone, it did damage, or if he/she could grapple someone across the room from them. 2) Debuffs are pretty much curse, shapechange somebody, or...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Revisits Psionics

I sometimes think they have seller's remorse over giving sorcerers and monks points. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a 5.5e (or 5e version of Pathfinder Unchained) if, instead of chi, monks got "martial arts" some of which were at will, but most having a level 1-9 and the table of when you...

Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

Every class (except maybe the fighter and no one can agree on the ranger) has both an idea of how you get power and why others don't. That poor goblin cannon fodder the PC's just killed: He wasn't a wizard because he didn't study to be a wizard. Ditto why he wasn't a monk. He wasn't a...
