    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

Well, I asked that the ops make the title of this thread as "Constructive Criticism" for a reason. It's very easy to pick the box apart, or take the knee-jerk response of defending it against all criticism. I feel the Red Box is the best D&D Starter Set in ages. But frankly, it's just not up to...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

The point is that the Red Box doesn't live up to the standards of its packaging. Sure, by the (admittedly low) standards of WotC Starter Sets, it's a "B" or maybe even an "A." But by putting it in the classic packaging, they're inviting comparisons to the Mentzer Red Box. Not just from us, but...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

[Counter-Nitpick]Sorry, but no. I've got both my Moldvay and Mentzer pamphlets right here. And in both, Halflings totally lacked the special abilities of thieves and therefore have to be considered to be more like fighters. Moreover, the description says "halflings behave similarly to fighters...

    The Red Box Smells Weird...

I noticed the smell, but it didn't seem at all odd to me. However, I asked my wife, who has a much more acute sense of smell than I. She assures me it's the plastic pouch the dice come in. In other words, the box has a slight odor of cheap plastic. If you're enough of an old-timer to be...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

The game adheres to the absolute letter of the law concerning what it advertises. I argue that a D&D without substantial replayability. No equipment list? No ability to pick up the weapons goblins drop? The rogue Weapon Finesse power even mentions a bonus with "light blades, light crossbows and...

    Essentials Red Box Errata

Confining myself to actual errata, and trying not to be too repetitive... General: Only the fighter part of the "choose your own adventure" path directs a newbie to the picture on the bottom of page 6 for an explanation of the different kinds of dice. The other classes seem to simply assume...

Some Improvements for the Red Box!

The fundamental problem with the argument that "The Starter Set is a trailer" or "The Starter Set is like the free trial cards for WoW" is that those things are free!! The Starter Set isn't!! I'll put on my business hat, rather than my gamer hat. What does D&D offer? 1. It's a social and...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

Yes, but there's a difference between the "Red Box" and Blizzard's free trial cards for WoW. The Red Box isn't FREE! "Get them hooked with a super-limited experience" is a fine marketing idea for a free product. It is a terrible, sneaky, underhanded tactic for a product people shell out good...

Some Improvements for the Red Box!

The original Mentzer "Red Box" had the exact same target audience. Actually, the audience was harder back then, in that the majority had nothing to even compare it to. And yet, they managed to explain it very well. And include character creation rules and enough stuff to keep you adventuring...

Some Improvements for the Red Box!

Okay, since I feel there were some good comments that got deleted after the errata thread became errata only, I suggest people voice them in this thread... I just want to clarify some of the points I made above. I understand what the new Red Box is. I'm just disappointed based on what it could...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Yeah, that's been my guess as well. I wonder how many of these errors and inconsistencies WotC will fix on the next print run of the Red Box? I'd like to hope they'd fix them all AND take some of our suggestions into account (like including real character creation rules), but I'm probably dreaming.

New D&D novel: Mark of Nerath

When it comes to game-related novels, I've found the following authors to be talented and entertaining enough as writers to stand the test of time: Weis & Hickman R.A. Salvatore Rich Baker Keith Baker Elaine Cunningham (sometimes) Ed Greenwood (sometimes) I bought Gygax's Gord the Rogue...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Well, Weapon Talent seems to be factored into the Fighter's numbers (hence the extra +4/+3 for using a greatsword/greataxe respectively, rather than +3/+2). Something like Heroic Slayer is present too, but it adds Con as a bonus to your damage instead of Dex (D&D Starter Set Player's Book, step...

Is the Redbox Rogue All Cocked Up?

Making matters worse, the Red Box specifically refers you to "Heroes of the Fallen Lands for full details on the slayer fighter, the mage wizard, the thief rogue, and the warpriest cleric, which are the extended versions of the four classes presented in this product." (Starter Set Dungeon...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

Sorry, but no. I've read those pages. They pay lip service to the notion of creating new adventures, using the existing map. Granted there are monsters, I freely admit that, but the treasure information is woefully inadequate. Do you really think 7 distinct magic items is sufficient for a...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

Like all the recent Starter Sets, but totally unlike the original Red Box, this isn't in any way replayable - at all. It's basically one starter adventure. And once you hit level 2, you realistically need more than this box includes. Granted there's monsters and you can build your own...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

Well, I hope this counts as problems and/or issues. Frankly, I'm disappointed. I was hoping for a new 4e-compatible version of the Mentzer box. This isn't that, and I think WotC has missed the point of a Starter Set. Again. Look, maybe this is marketing's fault, but stop throwing up starter...

Essentials Rules Compendium preview copy in hand

I think that is largely the point. An updated version that in no way invalidates what came before. I freely admit Essentials is "a revision" to 4th Edition (the latest), but I don't think that makes it 4.5, because 4e has been continuously revised since its introduction. That somewhat begs the...

Some Improvements for the Red Box!

Okay, since there's already a stickied thread charting errors here, I won't delve into that. What I'd like to use this thread for is compiling suggestions to WotC for improvements in the next version of the set. What did you like about the box, what didn't you like? I'll start. I love the solo...
