New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Well, to be fair, if they're using the standard array, most people will figure it out that every character has the same starting stats, so... And somewhere they have to tell you what skills are class skills for your class or at least which one your PC has trained ('cuz the sheets aren't, as I...

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

I predict that with the release of Essentials, the tiefling will become an Int/Con or Cha race.

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

The tweets I saw said that "when the time was right" was WotC's response to when they would do a new print run of the PHB. Apparently they haven't decided whether they will print a corrected version (errata changed) or just do another print-run of the original book. I imagine which will depend...

    Fighter Slayer preview

Well, Battlemind and Seeker could have been great concepts. Seeker was an attempt at "Primal Ranger." Battlemind was another shot at "Medieval Jedi." I may be totally off-base, but I suspect those are class concepts people would have totally gotten behind. They do, however, kinda require...

    Fighter Slayer preview

Except that, as of the mage, we already have two meanings of "evocation." So it's already confusing! That and the fact that there's already an "Invoker" that's a divine controller class. I surmised WotC wouldn't want to be that confusing. But based on the 2 meanings of "evocation," perhaps it...

Mordenkainen's Magical Emporium & magic items

You mean like requiring bits of some fire-using creature in order to make a flaming sword? Yeah, something like that would be very cool.

Mordenkainen's Magical Emporium & magic items

Well...just as a thought... Common: things players can make and you're likely to find for sale in a shop that deals in such things. Uncommon: less frequently found, they can still be made and bought, but the latter would generally be a commission thing, rather than finding one "lying around."

Mordenkainen's Magical Emporium & magic items

So, I noticed some thing about this product while browsing the report from the Critical Hits blog. Since there seems to be some confusion, I thought I'd cross-post the relevant quote. So my guess is that "common" items are things like magic swords, armor, & implements, potions of healing and...

Any hints on the essentials ranger?

While I would love to, there's several other sources of blame, one due to Fritz Leiber, one due to Professor Tolkien, and the third is just "logic." Leiber's Fafhrd was a dual wielder (as was the Grey Mouser). Fafhrd was also a northern barbarian skilled in the longbow, tracking, wilderness...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Yeah, that's my take as well. However, I have already ordered a Red Box of my very own. Two reasons. For one, I've had to introduce some new players (and fallen away veterans) to D&D, and this seems like a good way to re-boot with a new campaign and do it properly. Secondly, I just couldn't...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Fair, but it's an Essentials Fighter, and seems to have more in common with the slayer. The question is whether Heroes of the Fallen Lands lays out guidelines for how the 'subclasses' of 'knight' and 'slayer' are builds of the fighter class. Both get "weapon talent" & "power strike" and I would...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Hmmm...only 2 at-will stances (although one we didn't know about before). But I don't think we should read too much into that. Looks like both of the fighter's utility options are new Skill Powers similar to the ones in PHB 3. INT-eresting. I'm gonna guess we'll get more of those in the Heroes...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Different. The old ones were a white dragon, black dragon, and rage drake, reversing a dire wolf, warhorse, and gelatinous cube. Thalmin: So it includes an adventure that levels you up to 2nd, and the powers for that, but NOT those for going up to 3rd? I suppose that's okay, but I think 3...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Sounds like the set may be a 'slayer' fighter, 'thief' rogue, 'warpriest' cleric and 'mage' wizard. Talk about old school!

12 PC tokens? I don't think the 2008 Starter Set had anything like that many. Am I misremembering?

Shadowfell Box set coming in 2011! (an other GenCon announcements)

Or you could look at their approach as "Our design direction was spot on for the early stage of a new edition. But now that we've covered most of those things (and who can honestly say there's tons left to do class and power-wise, we can expand the line to include The Complete Mule." Just 'cuz...

How many levels does the set cover? Early reports said 1-3. Then we heard 1-2, then 1-3, then 1-2 again.

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

You know, I had speculated that they would have "ordinary character creation rules" somewhere in there. But now that I think about it, this is probably a better system. Think about it. Create concept. Decide class. And then they embed the rest of your picks in such a way that they would become...

Shadowfell Box set coming in 2011! (an other GenCon announcements)

Just more fuel to the fire. Remember from the TRS Red Box unpacking that the intro blurb mentions Neverwinter Nights alongside Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft and Dragon Age.
