D&D 4E 4th Edition and the 'Adventuring Day'

Fourth boiled all character abilities down to one of At-Will, Per-Encounter, and Per-Day. It was very video-game inspired, and every class got some of each. In addition, they had healing surges and introduced the concepts of the short rest (during which anyone could spend a healing surge to...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

I don't know if this has been said, but WotC's decision regarding the handling of Half-Elves (at least) is actually much closer to how they were portrayed by Tolkien. What do I mean? In Middle-Earth, the Half-Elven are given the choice of which side of their ancestry to embrace. They could...

D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the next UA in April

^^^This. Where’s that gif of Jeff Goldblum mumbling Ass-gard when you need one?

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Actually, that was hilarious. As I recall, there was a surprising amount of backlash over getting rid of Darkvision, cosmology, 3’6” Halflings, and a lot of really dumb things. There was some legit griping over the pace of rollout, and a lot more over the sameness of the classes. Having...

D&D 5E (2014) Telekinesis Is A Bad Spell, For The Game

I actually think Wildshape would be fine as "X without a short rest" (2024 Revision currently starts at 2x and goes to 4x by 9th-level) if they limited the degree to which you shift back to your normal form. So shifting from animal to animal is just an action you can take, but resuming humanoid...

D&D Movie/TV D&D: Honor Among Thieves Open Discussion [Full Spoilers]

Dungeons & Dragons isn't even always something you can talk about even among your hoard of Ren Faire friends, so I totally get you. Heck, I even remember when us D&D players were getting mocked by the Vampire, Rifts, and Magic players... We've come a long way baby!!

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Movie Review

The problems with the halflings isn't an FX problem so much as a lore one. It's the thing that was noted when they tried re-doing them in 4e. A normally proportioned "2 to 3-foot tall" Halfling is REALLY short and small. Hobbits look "better" because 1) they tend to be kinda pudgy, and 2)...

D&D Movie/TV D&D: Honor Among Thieves Open Discussion [Full Spoilers]

I'll also note, when it comes to fashion, that some things that might seem to be "out of place" are, in fact, not. I'll give an example from discussions I've had with costuming directors at the Renaissance Faires I work at. One of the most common lower-body garments worn by men in late-16th...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

As an aside, I forking hate Darkvision, because it ends up being something nearly every character ancestry has, is stupid and largely makes torches, lanterns and magical light spells pointless. We should go back to: Low-Light Vision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

Come up with a list of Heritage feats that represent blended ancestry (or not). And make them Background Feats that can only be taken at character creation. I'll take a stab at the 2 most iconic, and one more (Abilities derived from Unearthed Arcana: Character Origins): Elf-Blooded (Background)...

D&D Movie/TV D&D: Honor Among Thieves Open Discussion [Full Spoilers]

Regarding the 5e time period portrayal of the Forgotten Realms (and Waterdeep in particular), I have something to add. You see, my group got hired by WotC to perform as actors and swordfighters at the Stream of Many Eyes liveplay event Wizards did back in 2018. It was a blast, but when they...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

And I don't even know that the movie is that gonzo/weird. The characters mostly travel by horse, there's a balloon but no airships, no long-distance teleportation, very few magic items, and the only flight is due to either the Druid's Wildshape or one highjacked Aarokocra. Like, it's awesome...

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Weapons Table Shows 'Mastery' Traits

Using a rapier without employing your offhand was extremely rare, which was, I believe, the point he was making. That offhand might be employed holding a dagger, a buckler, a cape, your barehand, a glove with a mailed palm, or, in rare cases, another rapier. The most common of them, for various...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Creator Summit--'D&D Beyond And Beyond'

I 100% agree with you, but desperately wish Bladesinger would be done as a subclass of Bard (where, IMO, it more naturally fits), rather than a subclass of Wizard. With Bards having become a full caster class in 5e, and the Bladesinger being a light armor wearing, sword-wielding singer, it would...

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

It does! And yeah, it’s definitely an odd choice. 😂

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

I am sure it will be labeled/notated as "5th-Edition Revised" or some such. I just doubt they'll put a software-esque version number on it, something I'm pretty sure they have forever regretted doing with 3.5.

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

Personally, I suspect the 2024 books will be labeled: Dungeons & Dragons: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition (Fifth-Edition Revised)

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

I'm saying that nowhere does it explicitly self-identify itself as the "fifth edition Player's Handbook," just that this particular printing of the Player's Handbook is usable with "the fifth edition of..." the other books. It's a semantic distinction, and a slightly weird one to get hung up on...

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

The devil is always in the details, and definitions matter. Your "significantly changed" might be another person's "minor alterations." What level of change do you consider "significant?"

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

The back-cover-text on the 2014 PHB refers to its companion books as "the fifth edition Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual," but nowhere in or on the book does it self-identify itself as "fifth edition." Believe me, I just checked quite carefully.
