D&D 5E (2014) Let’s Read Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.

Precisely why I loved the corporate-minded Vrusk from Star Frontiers. Also, I love this thread! Fantastic work, Leatherhead!

RPG Evolution - RPG Inspiration: In-Person Events

Not necessarily a favorite or a regular stomping ground, but casinos! About 20 years ago, I took my first trip to Vegas, and the level of detail in some of the themed hotel/casino combos blew my naïve mind. Treasure Island (pirates), the Luxor (ancient Egypt), Caesar's Palace (ancient Rome)...

D&D General Supposing D&D is gamist, what does that mean?

I can totally agree with this, but it's still fun to discuss the way some folks approach the game. :) As an admitted 5e gamist, I can also agree with this! Good question! But I don't think a game-y approach is primarily about hp - it's about the totality of the finite resources available and...

D&D General Supposing D&D is gamist, what does that mean?

Another way to look at this is to apply the terms more to the DM than to the books of rules themselves. I believe the D&D rules - particularly 5e - apply to all three categories, but the way some DM's might host sessions, present their scenarios, and apply the books' rules would reveal an...

Spelljammer Why Play Spelljammer Over a Regular Pirate Campaign?

So many others have already addressed the OP's question very well, but I'd like to share this perspective: I spent over two glorious years as a player in the Pathfinder 1e very pirate-forward AP Skull and Shackles, and there was never a moment's doubt as to our adventures' style, tone, or...

    Spelljammer Spelljammer 5th Edition pre-orders

I've resisted the special covers, but these...oh, my... They're so spelljammery gorgeous! Folks who have the purchased the previous special covers, were you happy with the final product?

Hugh Grant the next Doctor (Who)

Perhaps a recurring villain role. Hugh seems to be into the bad guy thing lately.

    A Question of Religious Character

There's a lot to like about this suggestion! I'm going to seriously consider it... Great write-up, overall. I'll admit to getting lazy about religions and godly-powers-made-manifest, thoughtlessly treating divine magic like the wizardly stuff. You've made me realize I'm not doing the concept of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Doctors & Daleks - Cubicle 7 Brings Doctor Who to D&D 5E

I'll hold C7 to continue making Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space play and feel like a Dr. Who TV episode, which it really does. I'd love for C7 to make Doctors and Daleks play and feel like a D&D session but with Dr. Who aliens and sci-fi adventure hooks.

    D&D 5E (2014) Doctors & Daleks - Cubicle 7 Brings Doctor Who to D&D 5E

Same here! Although... I'm totally thinking the same thing, now, as well! The existing Dr. Who game is fun, but I wouldn't mind a more combat-y 5e adaptation with wildly diverse PC race options like Draconians, Galactic Federation Ice Warriors, Menoptera, Judoon, Catkind, etc, facing off...

D&D General The Beating Heart of the OSR, Part 1

B/X was the first D&D I owned, and I was enamored with it. However, I dreamed of playing B/X more than I actually played it back then - which was barely. So your data was fascinating to me because my puppy love and nostalgia made me certain that B/X was the source of all wonderful OSR-ness...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiverse Theory and you

As a DM, never happened. As a player, I once had a PC jump from the middle of a Pathfinder 1e AP into a 3e Forgotten Realms one-shot and then back again, and we made it “canon” sort of. That’s the closest vibe gotten to anything like a multiversal experience. It was meh.

D&D nostalgia, Greatest music year this century

Oh, the nostalgia! This was a lot of me, too, with the music to match. Don’t know what inspired your post, but you just messed with my temporal reality (and determined my playlist for the rest of the week). Cheers!

OSR Old School Essentials Box Sets Kickstarter

Can you elaborate? I’m in the camp of those who want in on OSE but are confused by the catalog. I don’t have OSE and would love to not wait long to give it a go. If I’m primarily interested in the B/X-y experience, can the Advanced Fantasy book(s) give that to me?

D&D General The Rakshasa and Genie Problem

Gonna agree with Dannyalcatraz about reskinning and renaming. These days, I'm happily looking at this issue (which is a legitimate one) as an opportunity to refresh my stable of baddies and innovate my stale campaign worlds. Borrowed creatures and concepts have become my starting points of...

D&D General What are you prepping for your next D&D session? (+)

I just did a 5e Session 0 - descriptive only - with five at-risk young people (4 girls, 1 boy) in the middle school where I coach teachers. Only one student has ever played D&D before. I presented 5e races and classes reskinned to fit their Latin American and Chinese roots (e.g. duende instead...

D&D 5E (2014) What is Your Favorite WotC 5E Setting Book, and Why?

Van Richten. I’ll never exhaust all that it has to offer, and the inherent replay value in the Dread domains conceit is actually compelling. Dark Gifts, Curses, and Survivor rules are added treats.
