    Blog: Paladin vs. Cleric, fight!

People roar about anything WotC produces, says, or does. This is the internet and we would roar if WotC suggested the M-U should use d6 for hit points. People would roar if Forgotten Realms was announced as the new 'core' setting for DnD and they'd roar if Forgotten Realms wasn't announced as...

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

I doubt OGL would be enough of an issue for a leaving of WotC. 4e was not OGL and if some one was to hire me to such a position then I doubt that I would count on OGL being a deal breaker. I would drop out as it was suggested if the WotC/Hasbro were going to try and touch my IP (like Monte's...

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

I have found the design process for 5e interesting to say the least. In January it was announced that they had been working on a new design and had been hinting at it for almost a year in various articles like L&L and Rule of 3. The initial follow on articles suggested that they were far less...

    Surprise!

I would treat this as a training issue with skills. The old system of roll a d6 did not really reward the person that took the time to hide or sneak or move silently along. Removing the skill element from the Surprise would penalize a person that wanted to attempt to sneak along. I have...

    Blog: Paladin vs. Cleric, fight!

I like the attempt at a list but I would suggest this list; 1. The Paladin is a Blessed Warrior or a Warrior of Faith Through out the history of DnD, the Paladin has firmly been in the Fighter/Warrior/Defender group. He is first a warrior and secondly marked by his religious conviction or...

Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

I worry very little if spells like Flame Strike, Blade Barrier, and Earthquake are not on the the 'Divine' list at release. I'm sure that splat books or 3rd party sources will 'fix' the problem and produce spells as deadly as any arcanist selection within a year.

Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

They could also go with an 'aura' effect where the players in the group trigger their own healing and get a bonus to the healing value if the Cleric is near enough to them when they do it. It is an indirect bonus to healing that doesn't consume the Cleric's action for someone else's gain.

    Blog: Paladin vs. Cleric, fight!

Huh? There are plenty of orders in Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and Forgotten Realms. There are even rules specifying how these orders are different from each other. Greyhawk has orders going back to OD&D. Dragonlance has orders going back 1st ed DnD. If you look at back issues of Dragon magazine...

Blog: Background and Themes a closer look.

Two things WotC is going to have to consider and allow for with this idea. 1> The selection of the feats in these Themes should be done by playtest groups (or adjusted by playtest groups after initial Designer suggestions). I often find that designers tend to be poor in their feat selections...

    Blog: Paladin vs. Cleric, fight!

I agree with others that say that Wizards needs to re-think the Paladin. The original Paladin was back in the days of the original Cleric when DnD had a more nebulous, monotheistic, overtone. Clerics worked to protect good and Paladins were fighters that had served good for most of their lives...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

Just a couple of thoughts; 1> When I play a Vancian Wizard, I usually don't fill all my 'slots' with memorized spells at the start of the day. I usually choose some combat spells for 'emergency' use and a couple of utility style spells that I know can be my 'fall back' spells. I use the...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

You forgot a couple of other problems; 4. The self-buff spells and items (I include the polymorphs in this category as they are really self buffs that affect many things at the same time). I don't think people are in a hurry for mages or druids to be turning into giant apes or bears again...

    Hit Points: Hitting the Wall

I think this is really a Sport vs Realism question. If the majority of encounters that players face are based on them having 'full resources' (hit points, access to spells, supply of 1 shot resources like potions) then this is sport play. In Sport play, it makes sense for the players to want...

    DnD Podcast April 13

Except that I didn't care on the limit of spells in BD&D when it came out. I didn't like it but I didn't care because I had my AD&D 1st ed book at the time. We used to hodge podge at that time and mix systems freely. I'd have to go back to revamping spells from earlier editions (hopefully not...

    DnD Podcast April 13

Even if they are using the idea of rituals to cover some of the spells, I don't think people would be happy with less than 20 real choices per level. AD&D to PF have around 30 choices for 1st level with a decreasing number as a player levels for Wizards. The Schtick of a Wizard is that they...

    DnD Podcast April 13

I'm expecting the 6 spells per level in the basic game will likely get plenty of flak. It is pretty iconic of DnD from 1st through 3rd that Wizards had a large choice of spells. Older DnD just hadn't built all the variety of spells that later compilations were filled with. 4th ed had a major...

    DnD Podcast April 13

Just sitting down now to listen to DnD Podcast. It is supposed to have Mike Mearles and Jeremy Crawford talking on the DnD Next Playtest. Then a discussion on Lords of Waterdeep. Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (D&D Podcast)

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

I'm a hybrid! I've picked up and played every version from 3 book original DnD to 4e (and have all the editions in some state around the house). My current main group that I GM refused to switch to 4e. Personally, I still gamed with a couple of 4e groups and had some of my funnest battles in...

Ideas and musings on my ideal magic rules system

Looking over your list and the limits on what you want to put on magic. My question is... would some that came to your game and magic system 'feel' like a Wizard? If your answer is 'but it is balanced this way' then the answer is not acceptable because 'the play is the thing'. If you want...

D&D 5E (2014) Jonathan Tweet & Rob Heinsoo: Making their own 5th Edition?

13th Age Announced Jonathan Tweet and Rob Heinsoo announce they are developing a game for release in 2012 called 13th Age. They are doing playtesting now. These two designed 3E and 4E. How much of a curve ball does this toss in the Pathfinder and DnD Next projects? Pathfinder started off...
