Level Up (A5E) Level Up's Downtime activities

Is there an equivalent to spellcraft for combat maneuvers? Find a weapon master, cue training montage, and get some upgraded combat tricks?

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #17: Journeys

I would say it was an Intelligence check, with Deception added if proficient, to disguise the wagon.

Level Up (A5E) Level Up: An issue of class names

Hmm, a Herald/Paladin could multiclass, but a Fighter/Fighter could not (I don't know why they would want to, but it is a weird side effect of some classes having name changes but others not).

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want out of crafting rules?

I do not want crafting magic items to require spellcasting at all. I hated that 3e thing where one just cast spells repeatedly at an item and suddenly it turned magic. I do want tool and skill proficiencies to be important. I like the idea of recipes, and the need for special ingredients. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Less armour but same protection

The deep jungle makes makes all armors seem extra-cumbersome. The total armor you can lug around on your body has an AC cap at whatever your Str modifier is. Want to wear leather armor? Better have a 12 Strength. Want leather and a shield? Now you need a 16 Str to pull it off. You can still add...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #4: Druid

I feel like the Fighter knacks are worse, because the Fighter has to use an exertion die to get one reroll, while a Druid can reroll for free as often as they need.

    Level Up (A5E) Improving spells

I would like a Saving Throw line added to the stat block, rather than it being buried in the text, like Save: Wis, negates, or Save: Dex, 1/2 damage.

Level Up (A5E) Object interaction, spell components, unarmed attacks and hand usage

What's good for the casters can be good for the martials, too. Imagine not having to juggle weapons while trying to turn a doorknob. Or being able to throw four daggers. The ammo property will finally make sense (right now a Fighter can draw and knock 4 arrows a turn, but can't get that second...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you play without Critical Hits?

I'm part of that small percentage of people who hates crits. When I first started playing 5e my group just plain forgot to apply extra crit damage whenever a 20 was rolled. Besides the forgetting part, I found the MOAR DAMAGE thing boring. It would be cool if a crit had something interesting...

RPG Sales for Black Lives Matter

I am glad I saw this thread. I have a cause that I am set to donate to, but I am going to do this too. I think it is a great thing that gamers from all over can come together and contribute. Every little push is a little movement forward, and if everybody pushes together, we might actually get...

D&D 5E (2014) It is OK for a class to be the worst

Actually, if G is the best class, and one aims for D in power, then fixing the worst class just reduces the the spread from A to G to B to G, and fixing B then reduces the spread from B to G to C to G. If the power spread is huge, this is a good thing; if it is small, it's just tweaks to make it...

WotC Comparing EN World's Demographics to the D&D Community's

Wait, did you just make a blanket statement about how all of "today's girls" just have incorrect opinions about what they like? Like, women just can't know for themselves what they want to see in art, because they have been trained wrong, and can't possibly have thought this out themselves or...

D&D General Which do you prefer, character build or fixed growth?

I always thought of "build" that way too, until 3e ruined it. Seemed everyone started using "build" to mean planned out leveling from 1 to 20. I never had a 3e character take a prestige class, for example, because by the time one seemed organically relevant to my character's growth, turns out I...

D&D General Which do you prefer, character build or fixed growth?

Huh, I always see the term "build" used to mean planned out from level 1 as to what one will take each level for the life of the character. Which I can't stand. I like both options as described above, though. Prefer the fixed template for quick starts and one shots, but need it to be flexible...

D&D General Things to Find in a Large River?

A sunken boat A burning barge beset by bandits A giant herd of hippos that refuses to move fishing nets (with various things caught in them, or set by various things that might be trying to catch you) A river "god" that claims to own the place and demands tribute A sarcophagus washed from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Saving Throws and non-proficiency

I am curious why you didn't keep the 8 DC and proficient saves the same, and give non-proficient saves a bonus of proficiency - 2 (+1 at 5th, +2 at 9th, +3 at 13th, and +4 at 17th)? Am I missing something with the math?

What is missing in 5E that you had in other editions?

I miss really simple stat blocks for monsters. So simple they could often be reduced to a single line in some cases. Made adventure writing so much easier, and compact. I really, really miss this. Oh, and wimpy orcs. Never read Tolkien, so AD&D orcs are my metric. 5 hp, a sword or spear, and no...

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

Heh, that sounds like awful design. I never had any FR books. When 2e came out I did buy a pack of character sheets that turned out to have a background alternating between light green and dark green. The dark green was so dark the only way to read pencil on it was to tip the sheet so light...

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

What I find most frustrating is the colored font on colored background. I was looking at the monster manual yesterday because I had an adventure idea I was working on, and that hard-to-read color on color was just sucking the joy out of working on the project. Editions one through four books...
