Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

Starfleet Intelligence is a thing. They're considered a bit of a joke by the Romulan Tal Shiar and Cardassian Obsidian Order (but on the other hand they didn't get suckered into wiping themselves out by the Dominion). They seem a little under-funded - at one point the commandeer Miles O'Brien...

D&D 5E (2014) What does it mean when a Web spell is "layered across a floor, wall, or ceiling?"

Giving it the full depth can be important, since it also provides obscurement.

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

To be fair, though, the Section 31 of this movie is not the Section 31 of DS9. They are not infiltrating higher levels of various societies, they are not proactively seeking to destabilise other nations based upon the potential for them to pose a threat to the Federation, and they are not...

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

Which the new movie breaks by being set much later and still having Section 31 portrayed as Starfleet's official Black Ops division.

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

Assuming that it wasn't the threat of the virus that was spurring on the Dominion to keep fighting at all costs in the first place.

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

One thing that was very clear in DS9 was that Section 31 was a nigh-unknown organisation that most people in Starfleet had never heard of. This seems at odds with its portrayal in both Discovery and this movie as a known associate organisation of Starfleet. Incidentelly, the stardate given for...

D&D 5E (2014) What does it mean when a Web spell is "layered across a floor, wall, or ceiling?"

It's magical, I'm happy for it to still be sticky. Plus, I don't want to keep track of more exceptions for underwater spells than absolutely necessary.

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

DS9 is top-tier Trek for me. I wouldn't want to have missed it, and it strikes a good balance between lauding the Federation's ideals and showing how much they cost (as well as what it looks like from outside). Picard is such a weird show. It feels like three different shows, there's so little...

Streaming services, which do you have or are you getting rid of?

I currently have Prime, Netflix and Disney+ as always-on. Honestly, Netflix doesn't really justify my subscription in terms of output of new shows, but I keep it around as having a comfortably accessible library that I'll probably find something worth watching in when I feel the need...

    Star Trek: Section 31

It really doesn't even come close to being as Star Trek-y as the Kelvinverse movies.

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

Section 31 works fine as a villainous group of Federation extremists who've lost their way. It only stops working when it stops being treated as the outright villain. Having it be a known part of Starfleet as of the Discovery era was a mistake, and contradictory to the way it was originally...

    Star Trek: Section 31

Even leaving aside the tone and morality, this just didn't feel like Star Trek at all. The whole thing takes place outside any Trek faction's territorial space, none of the ships that we get a close look at have anything resembling the Star Trek aesthetic, everyone has generic zap guns, and the...

D&D 5E (2014) What does it mean when a Web spell is "layered across a floor, wall, or ceiling?"

I'd treat the water as air - it doesn't count as a solid surface to anchor the web, but nor does it hinder it (maybe crashing waves would break it apart). Cast it underwater in an area where there are some solid anchor points around and it'll work just fine.

D&D 5E (2014) What does it mean when a Web spell is "layered across a floor, wall, or ceiling?"

Basically, it's just saying (a) if you cast it in open air without any solid surfaces within its volume (like if you're in an aerial battle 200' up and you cast it on some nearby flying opponents) then it will work initially but it'll collapse after a round, and (b) if you cast it on a flat...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Is Almost Upon Us! Discuss What You Want

The one that really put me off was the episode with the guy who's a walking date-r*pe drug whose pheremones were pulling people so deeply into sexual relationships they'd never have even considered without external influence that it leads to the captain abandoning his duties during a major peace...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Is Almost Upon Us! Discuss What You Want

I keep hearing such good things about The Orville that I feel like I should give it another chance after the major stumbling blocks I hit at the end of season 1 / start of season 2, but I just can't get there.
