Speeding up combat: have you tried to halve hit points?

One optional rule that others mentioned is halve monster HP (but not players) but then double damage that monsters do (not players). Mathematically a monster that normally lives for 6 rounds now dies in 3. But they still do the same amount of damage in those three rounds so combat moves faster...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Physical D&D Next Books

I want lots of books. Big thick books so I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. The Pathfinder core book is a little too big, but thats kind of what I want. I dislike boxed sets for anything but campaign setting material or super adventures.

    Levels, Tiers and Complexity

Wow! Awesome ideas, there. I concur completely. :) Yes, exactly. Being an old school gamer from 1e days, I can attest that this is true. Even more so than today. New gamers can go pick up any number of video games and be a badass from the getgo. If they aren't going to have a totally...

D&D 3.x Things from 3e (inc PF) not done well

Tome of Battle was the BEST 3e supplement. I won't play a 3e game without it. :) That said here is what was broken or I despised in 3e: Too many classes dependent on high scores in multiple abilities Ability damage and buffs and the resulting cascade of numbers across the sheet Boring fighters...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

The problem with levels is they imply that you must start at 1 and proceed up the chain. I don't like the idea that level should also determine play style. Play style in terms of gritty vs. heroic should be a "dial" that is not predicated on level. 5e should have level 1 be anything from 1e...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

First of all epic is broken in 3e. Second of all, like I mentioned before, campaigns always seem to start at level 1, and die by level 10. I'm one of the only DMs I know that has consistently DMed a group from level 1 to 20. Over the years I have heard the same broken promises from so many DMs...

    Hit Points?

The 4e HP model is perfect for me. I don't want to see many if any changes. You get somewhere between 20-30 at level 1 and approx. 5 per level thereafter. Simple and easy. A first level PC should at least be able to survive 4 to 5 hits from a level 1 monster before going down. Maybe drop some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

In my theater everyone clapped and cheered. :) Not without chance of failure or using resources. Just without having to make a number of difficult checks. The 7th level Rogue PC in my Pathfinder game can already do this so its not like being cinematically cool is some new concept for 5e. No...

D&D lovers who hate Vancian magic

For me I love D&D. I have been playing since 1e over 20 years ago. I love its general feel (especially 4e which is my preferred edition), but I dislike the concept of an X per day resource. Yes, even 4e dailies annoy me. And Vancian casting is the ultimate expression of a resource being...

D&D 4E Things from 4E Not Done Well

I like Savage Worlds, and I'm with you on the True20 and I'm a big M&M fan. I own every True20, Blue Rose, and M&M 1e, 2e, and 3e product produced. Awesome stuff from Green Ronin! But I love me some Tome of Battle. Best 3e supplement hands down in my opinion. :)

D&D 4E Things 4E Did Well & Should be Kept in Some Form

Here is everything I like (not an exhaustive list because I love 4e) and some might be redundant: Melee characters with cool abilities and maneuvers beyond just attacking Virtually every class has some self-healing Standard-Move-Minor action system (yes, even interrupts. Its a thing of beauty!)...

    Hit Points?

Ability score damage and/or buffs and the resulting cascade of number changes across the character sheet is one 3e "innovation" that I'm glad 4e jettisoned. I occasionally play PF and it drives me nuts. That being said, it'd be cool to see that as an option for people who like it, but I'll pass...

D&D 4E Things from 4E Not Done Well

That's your NOT done well list? Because 90% of that list I consider features of 4e that vastly improved the game over 3e. It will be interesting to see how 5e can reconcile people like us with vastly different tastes in gaming.

D&D 4E Things from 4E Not Done Well

Some of the stuff you guys post is stuff I love about 4e. :( What I dislike about 4e: Minis required No in combat recovery mechanic for encounter powers Rituals never reached their potential Too many fiddly petty magic items instead of a few rare awesome ones Magic items built into the math...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

I want an old school simplified damage dealing fighter as an option for those who like such things. But for me, I prefer cinematic LotR moments like Legolas single-handedly taking out the Oliphants and its riders and then riding it down as it falls. And I want to be able to do that at Heroic...

    Hit Points?

I like 4e HP as is. I don't want low HP, especially at low level. It leads to ridiculous outcomes likes house cats threatening adventurers. I want to be heroic and tough right from level 1. And no death spiral mechanics except as an optional sidebar maybe.

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

Agreed. 4e is a fantastic game when evaluated on its own merits without all the baggage that comes with being an edition of D&D. Its game design is superb and its my favorite edition to play by far. Though, I remain cautiously optimistic that 5e won't throw the baby out with the bathwater in...

4e works just fine as a game. In fact its my favorite edition to date, thank you very much.

    D&D 4E Things I Learned From 4e

I can't XP you for some reason, THIS! I agree with all of this! 4e monsters are perfect as is. The 4e combat system is nearly perfect as is. I love the Standard-Move-Minor action economy. I love that there is a certain amount of utility and healing self-sufficiency built into all classes in...

    D&D 4E What's the point of playing 4e now?

It better be interchangeable or all that talk of calling fans of all editions home is BS. 4e is currently my favorite edition of D&D, so 5e has a pretty high hurdle to overcome, IMO.
