    A box before the books!

I don't mind the box as an option for beginners, but I prefer books. Big books with all the rules packed in ala the Pathfinder core rulebook. Thats what I want.

D&D 5E (2014) [5E] To Vance or not to Vance - That is the Question

Vancian casting should be optional. I like to play casters who can do cool stuff without having to play the daily resource management mini-game. But I get that some people like that. For me that means I prefer that casters never need crossbows and have some spells and abilities that are always...

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

Its the model for all game publishers. Even Paizo will release a Pathfinder 2e at some point and they probably already have a confidential internal product road map for the next 2-3 years sketched out and Pathfinder 2e is on it. They probably already have early drafts and ideas for it even if...

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

WotC is saying all the right things about it being modular and being able to take what you like from each edition. I love 4e and believe it has a lot to offer. It has become my favorite D&D edition to date. That said, I'm not a big fan of open playtests. I don't like the idea that a vocal...

    Dear Mike & Monte

I don't like the tiered box set approach. Its one reason I refuse to buy or play Dragon Age. What WotC should do with Essentials is eliminate the redundant material and release everything in in Heroes of Fallen Lands and Forgotten Kingdoms, along with the Rules Compendium in a single hardcover...

How many campaigns have you finished?

Many of our games stop prematurely, but a few have gone the distance. I played in an awesome 3.5 based homebrew campaign that lasted two years and went from level 1 to 20 in the mid 2000's. I ran the original Rise of the Runelords using 3.5 gestalt PCs from start to finish back in 2008 before...

Monster manual 1 and 2 errata

I originally got the idea from the Sly Flourish blog. I tested it in play and found that it works great. And sure whipping out a calc for +25%, or cross-referencing monster math with the new damage expressions is doable, but +5 per attack per tier is math I can do instantly in my head much...

Taking computer RPG material into your table-top RPG

Strangely enough, I have never thought of doing that. Thats a brilliant idea, especially because I'm preparing to run a 4e game which makes it really easy to implement! Some people may deride this about 4e, but its a powerful strength in my opinion. I can easily borrow and implement ideas from...

WotC's (lack of) direct selling: please explain it to me

I could see WotC being pretty successful by partnering with Lulu or something to provide a print on demand option for all their prior edition materials. And it would establish a lot of good will in the gaming community.

Divided gaming group - looking for help.

I think you can use house rules to bridge the gap, depending on what your player's like or dislike about each system. My group plays both and its a balancing act. For example, for the 4e guys, failing a save and being stuck watching your friends play without you for multiple rounds is an...

D&D 4E WotC, DDI, 4E, and Hasbro: Some History

Hasbro re-acquired the D&D videogame rights in a settlement with Atari. It was late last year I believe. Hasbro is not a video game studio, so it would be foolish for them to develop their own game. What they would do, is go out into the market and see what companies are out there, and who is...

What WotC hasnt done yet: Old Settings

I loved the new Dark Sun books for 4e. They are the best DS books since the original boxed set from 1991, I think it was. The 1995 revised DS box set sucked, and so did the 3e based Dark Sun Dragon articles from about 5 or 6 years ago, IMO.

D&D 4E WotC, DDI, 4E, and Hasbro: Some History

D&D is a treasure trove of IP, that can be leveraged in a lot of ways. But even though the TRPG side is not as profitable, it is the core of what makes the brand, so it shouldn't be marginalized. Here is what I think WotC needs to do to really build up D&D: For the TRPG side: -Make the...

    Dragon magazine

Unfortunately not. I download all the articles into folders for each issue. If I had the full version of Acrobat, I could recombine them but I don't. :( Its a real pain. You reading this WotC people? For the love of all that is good and pure, please recombine the articles into one PDF. Its...

Monster manual 1 and 2 errata

Depending on how good my PCs are at optimizing (usually very good), I often only apply the damage bonus to monsters to make them more dangerous (and more in line with the damage expressions as of MM3 and later) because the PCs usually have no trouble hitting. I don't usually need to apply an...

Monster manual 1 and 2 errata

Here is what I do: Drop all monster defenses by 1 (by 2 for solos and soldiers) Drop solo HP from 0-20% (some solos are grindier than others) Add +5 to damage per attack per tier for every monster. (e.g. Paragon tier monsters get +10 damage to every attack). Done.

    4th Ed low(ish) fantasy

I have never actually run a game by stripping out the bonuses but it seems like it would work fine. Not sure if this math works since its off the top of my head, but generally speaking you could: For monsters subtract their level from all defenses and bonuses (but not damage). For PCs...

Info/help on the Star Wars Saga RPG?

I love Saga Edition. I have all the WotC d20 SW books. Both from the original release, the Revised rules, and Saga Edition. Saga Edition is my personal favorite, hands down. It uses a sort of a hybrid system that bridges the gap between 3.5 and 4e. Its a good game. Haven't played it in a long...

    Artifacts!

I like 4e artifacts. In fact, I think inherent bonuses should be the default rule and most magic items should be rare but powerful and work more like artifacts. Have some basic properties, and powers, but they grow in strength or new powers are revealed if you grow in concordance with the...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

Right. I have the newer Deluxe DM screen which is has most of the errata for that stuff built into it, so I forgot about that. Don't forget the Slayer is a Striker class, not a Defender role like the Knight or the original Fighter. So it will do more damage by design. But yeah, with Dailies...
