    Excerpts: Life in the Realms

Seeing as he's talked about his characters having day jobs, clerics being bothered by their clergy, etc, I'd say "Elminster's Forgotten Realms" as DMed by Ed Greenwood has a certain amount of non-monster-fighting, prosaic details. From a world building perspective, I personally I love that...

    D&D 5E (2014) How does 5e know what you're thinking? Psionics Mechanics..

I'd disagree even with this, but at the same time it is primarily a manner of fluff and trying to explain "it's just different" isn't really very productive. Still, I'll try (and fail): If magic is "supernatural," then psionics are "natural" [I'd agree in a fantasy world this distinction is...

    D&D 5E (2014) How does 5e know what you're thinking? Psionics Mechanics..

Exactly. While the effects might be the same or similar, how you get there is completely different. Kinda like how in 2nd edition at least, psionic invisibility required psychic combat and "clouding the mind" of each individual creature you were hid from -instead of throwing a coat of...

    D&D 5E (2014) How does 5e know what you're thinking? Psionics Mechanics..

With all the talk of making psionics a wizard specialty or sorcererous origin, I'm curious how many people who are fans of that approach are actually fans of the psion, or just see that as a way to tuck away something they're not really fond of in the first place? Full disclosure, I'm of the...

Perhaps you could also spend power points to use the at will abilities of different disciplines? I like the system proposed, but I have a feeling some would be disappointed with only having access to telepathy without being able to dabble in telekinesis.

    D&D 5E (2014) Defining Traits of the D&D classes

I like the idea Slobster put forward earlier in the thread. There's a lot of talk of the warlord being "just a type of fighter." Well, he is similar, give him similar armor proficiencies, etc. But whereas the fighter has expertise dice that all center on his actions, the warlord could use his...

    Fighting in darkness?

I'd say the most intuitive way to call it would to simply say, since nobody can see anything, that you both have disadvantage. If it needs to be hard wired, I'd say that to attack with advantage it is a prerequisite that you can see your target(barring special senses). Easy fix.

Legends & Lore 09/03 - RPG design philosophy

I didn't have the patience to read all this thread, so forgive me if someone also brought it up, but the predictability from "perfect" balance is a result of always having an "optimal" choice for what to choose next. It's more specifically talking about video games, but I thought this extra...

Stuff you don't have a problem with, but will never use

I feel like they pretty much settled 5e's direction with all these arguments about classes outside the core 4 in one of the Designing the Core seminars at Gen Con. (no I wasn't there, but the recording is up at the tome show The Tome Show). Basically, yes, a lot of the extra classes can be...

    Warlock Fluff - Poll

I really like some parts of it, but other could be clearer. Is the warlock primarily a "reality hacker" like has been talked about, or is his power ultimately based on the pact with a powerful entity? If the idea behind it is to mechanically fit an AEDU system, and the way to do that is with...

    Warlock and Sorcerer

Except for # of spells learned, spells available, spell DC, and ability to cast rituals. ... But yeah I can get where you're coming from. It definitely feels more exciting. I'd probably play this over the wizard, but that's mainly due to my preferences as to what kind of character I like to...

    Warlock and Sorcerer

Isn't this what they're doing, but with more flexibility? There is a progression of "sorcerous powers" the sorcerer gets every few levels, according to bloodline that he doesn't choose or change. He just also gets access to the sorcerer spell list for variety, which happens to overlap with the...

    Reclaiming Blingdenstone (Traps)

Or just treat the wisdom check as a "saving throw" for the trap. PCs walk into a room without actively "looking for traps," say "give me a wisdom roll" and if they fail don't give them time to realize "hey I should roll my Int," just spring the trap on them. If they make the "save at DC15" say...

    Warlock and Sorcerer

Hey, just saying, instead of guessing, the new classes are now in the playtest materials if you download them again... At first glance, it looks like sorcerer is a "willpower points" system and warlock is AEDU.

D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Next Playtest Packet Is Here!

I'll withhold judgment for now, but after browsing backgrounds I'm not sure how I feel about divorcing skill from ability scores again. They make a point to say what abilities are associated with a skill, but I don't see any mechanical relation when a skill modifier simply replaces an ability...

D&D 5E (2014) A Modest Proposal to Unify the Fanbase without D&D Next

I was hoping this proposal involved eating babies.

    Everybody has Spring Attack

Or just say that you can't double back on the same path that you traveled after making an attack. The whole attack-move-attack thing seemed to me like an attack while moving, not running up, stopping on your heels to attack, then backing up.
