Worlds of Design: The Destination, Not the Journey?

In current Adventurers League rules, players may (not required to) level up after every adventure. That's much too fast for my liking.

D&D 5E (2014) Which of dice is the most special? Why?

I have many twenty-sided dice numbered 0-9 twice as in the old days, mostly bought from Gamescience. I am much happier with them as d10s, being true Platonic solids, than with handling the geometric abominations that are currently fashionable as d10s. People will occasionally grab one of my...

D&D 5E (2014) What new linages do you want?

It's already a problem in Adventurers League. Every player is supposed to feel welcome, so when they bring their cat people, their turtle people, their fey, and so on into the game I'm running, then the isolated village NPCs are supposed to take it all in stride.

[Chaosium] Vale and farewell, Steve Perrin (1946 - 2021)

Ugly news to wake up to, but I knew he was having health problems. I've played games with Steve almost from the beginning. That became bi-weekly when he left the Bay Area c. 20 years ago and moved to Southern California. He continued to try new game systems and new scenarios. I am frustrated...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Virtual Table Top are you using right now and what do you like best about it?

Completely true. I find Roll20 to be limited, FG to be lovely and idiosyncratic. I fell in love with Foundry immediately, but its actual support for various systems is an ongoing project.

WotC Adventure Begins: A New Dungeons and Dragons Boardgame

Four PCs, but only three of them made the box art. Sorry, red Champion.

D&D 5E (2014) Path of Exile inspired virtue-skill gems as magic items

That's another approach that can work. Maybe use Blooming Blade as a model? Spectral Throw could simply allow you to throw (a force copy of) whatever melee weapon you are holding.

D&D 5E (2014) Path of Exile inspired virtue-skill gems as magic items

Red gems are strength skills (could add Con), green gems are dex skills, blue gems are int skills (or maybe other mental stats?). You are hnting at that. They definitely require attunement; you can only have a limited number. However, the PoE skill gems give at-will attacks. The closest analogy...

Worlds of Design: Always Tell Me the Odds

I didn't see much discussion of this. It's not that the GM might need to fudge the die rolls, it's that the designer has already fudged things so that a "moderate" encounter is heavily weighted in the players' favor, and a even a "deadly" encounter is as well.

    D&D 5E (2014) Epic Monsters: World Turtle

In context, I find this entry to be hilariously banal. In any other context, it would be an amazing ability.

What did Hubble see on your birthday?

This one is quite a [bow] shock.

    Doctor Who (2020) - spoilers!

    1. I didn't see any definitive link between The Timeless Child and The Doctor, just the Master's say-so. 2. Were there Brain of Morbius stills? I was thinking of that episode, but didn't back up to step through frame-by-frame. If so, group them with Doctor Ruth, but still no definitive ties to...

D&D 5E (2014) Exploration: What are the benefits of drawing a map?

Likewise. Specifically, we players in a space game (using real star coordinates within about 30ly of Sol) had a long list of surveyed planets. We had a shorter list of colonized planets. Eventually, while we were wondering where the secret pirate base was, I noticed that one of the surveyed...

    Doctor Who (2020) - spoilers!

I liked this part. The monsters never catch the companions, but in this case we saw why. They were bad at cornering and they possibly fought each other (not sure what I was seeing). Usually, the chase just arbitrarily fails before the companion closes a door, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Just One More Thing: The Power of "No" in Design (aka, My Fun, Your Fun, and BadWrongFun)

I play and run Adventurer's League. So, if it's in the official game, I have to deal with it. Streamlined game design is not just prettier, it's easier from the consumer point of view.

What is the backstory behind your NFL team's name/colors/mascot/etc.?

My team, the Minnesota* Vikings were obviously named in reference to the Scandinavian heritage in the area. It is the kitsch version of Viking history with horned helmets, Gjallarhorn calls in the stadium (itself shaped like a longboat), and so on. I assume the purple color and gold secondary...

Jonathan Tweet: Legacy of Ars Magica

I loved playing in Mythic Europe. (I don't play Ars Magica anymore.) For the publisher, I assume all those supplements nominated themselves (Mythic Iberia, etc.) without having to think too hard. I also like troupe play, and my groups do it a lot, but few games explicitly support the style.

D&D 5E (2014) Abandoning attunement and scaling back concentration

An example I haven't seen mentioned: I gave up casting Faery Fire when my druid hit ~9th level. But, melee types love it and it makes a big, big difference for at least a couple of rounds. I would definitely upcast it using a 3rd level slot and follow it up with a higher-level concentration spell.

    D&D 5E (2014) A tweak for Counterspell

This is a constant problem in Adventurer's League (which is admittedly its own unique thing). PC arcane casters are common, and they will always counter. NPC casters rarely appear more than 1 at a time.
