Pathfinder 2 - More on Dying, Resonance, & Much Math!

In PF1, UMD is a charisma skill. That may be what drove their thinking. You're coaxing the item to work for you (or some such).

Season 8 will switch to the Organized Play rules presented in XGTE

If a single adventure awards more than one checkpoint, then there is some opportunity, but the grains are pretty chunky.

Season 8 will switch to the Organized Play rules presented in XGTE

Agreed. I like story awards and I like the interaction when people count up magic items and determine who's eligible to get the +1 thingie. It's also another incentive to complete story objectives. Plus the ring of protection and the ioun stone and the manual of +2 dex (if any are offered...

D&D 5E (2014) Are there too darn many spellcasters?

4E had options for a weaponless fighter. Not much damage, but lots of grabbing and dragging. Would that be an example?

Season 8 will switch to the Organized Play rules presented in XGTE

In theory, somewhat. Two of the reasons that I identify for this exist in AL as well as PFS. First, the pickup nature of the game means that you never know whom you'll be sitting with. You might have to pull more than your own weight because of weak characters, inexperienced players, or bad...

Season 8 will switch to the Organized Play rules presented in XGTE

Pathfinder Society has been doing this forever - one XP per adventure, and 3 XP per level. Leveling feels very fast, possibly too fast (as it does in 5E at low levels). PFS has two other mechanics to encourage characters to actually engage with the story. First, faction prestige is awarded for...

D&D 5E (2014) [5E] [DM HELP!] Player Reliance on NPCs, Poor Spell Management, Poor Life Decisions

That's actually somewhat imaginative of your players to threaten to usurp this guy's rightful rule.

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell - Do I know my foes' spell before I counter?

Valid points. I was speaking generally of the style of AL D&D in my area (Los Angeles). Many judges announce the spell; a few just declare spellcasting; no one calls for ability checks. My own style is apparently "distinctive". In any case, tables often contain 2+ casters with counterspell, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell - Do I know my foes' spell before I counter?

I run games for counterspell-happy Adventurer's League players, and this is what I do. I announce the spell slot and never the actual spell. That gives the would-be counterspell caster the opportunity to decide what spell slot to use in reaction and whether to gamble on a caster check or not...

TSR What TSR-era RPG should get an official 5e reboot?

DragonQuest, though fondly remembered, was an SPI game. TSR acquired SPI, so it's not quite the same thing. Would Wizards publish multiple fantasy RPGs? Skills. Essentially fixed hit points. Wonky colleges of magic. I would like to see it again.

Just had an awful AL con weekend

The Saturday evening epic (peak demand time) was 25 tables plus perhaps 2 tables of other games.

Just had an awful AL con weekend

I've never heard of such a thing, but people who organize the con are also accessible at monthly events. You can also try feedback to the convention itself, such as here.

Just had an awful AL con weekend

I was running AL at Gamex, as I always do, and I assure you that any feedback on the forms gets back to us. Fred (one of the organizers) has also from time to time included his own assessment of the feedback. Noise is indeed a problem. As you may know, they moved us to the hotel basement a...

Unlimited Heroic And Ninja Action From Palladium Games

I never played Heroes Unlimited. Characters are generated semi-randomly, so what I did do is use the book as a source of endless characters ideas I then reproduced in Champions. The characters I created seemed to span a wide range of power (mind, I never played the game), so you have to be one...

D&D 5E (2014) White Plume Mountain: Tales of the Yawning Portal play report (Spoilerific!)

I must interrupt to say, this is a thing of beauty.

    The Expanse

Hard science wins me over. I like the depiction of thrust gravity, which is very rare for TV. We occasionally see braking thrust applied, though maybe not as often as we should. (Ships IIRC are usually pointed at their destination as they approach. We do see attitude thrusters fire, though.) I...

D&D AL admin Greg Marks talks with Misdirected Mark about recent changes.

I recognize all of these from the 4E Living FR epic modules, so this may be universally applicable advice. #4 and sometimes #1 and #3 also involved unique rules and abilities that were thematically appropriate to each module.

It does mean that, in order to continue playing my certed aasimar properly, I'll have to buy the Volo's Guide. Something I was not planning to do.
