Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

The thing is: publishers need to sell something to people if they want to keep the lights on. Theoretically, that could also be pre-made adventures, setting books, etc., but from what I know, core rules sell best, and then we have supplements with new rules/player options, and then nothing for a...

Games you need to go outside your normal group to play

I think generally, I don't have it so bad, because playing different systems is rather common in my groups. That being said, I'm not sure how well systems that stray farther from the traditional RPG experience would work/be received (e.g. the two examples OP mentions), and we typically switch...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Ironically, this sounds like a pitch for what could be a really good DCC adventure.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

A good PR person would hopefully have alerted him to the rather disastrous ripple effects of his decision to move ahead with the project. But at this point I have to wonder if I my previous picture of Goodman was too positive - maybe he does actually think engaging in business activity with the...

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – World's Largest Dungeon, Cosmic Dark, Neon City Outlaws, and more

Just want to say: I appreciate that you do this - it's one of the main reasons why I still visit ENWorld regularly even after I stopped playing 5e.

Goodman Games Offers Assurances About Judges Guild Royalties

I suspect even the money is secondary and Goodman just really wants to do this product. And he seems to think that he has created conditions under which it is acceptable to do this even though he is working with an open anti-Semite and white supremacist. Having thought about this for a couple...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

Do you have any examples (of newer games)? Because in general, I do agree and I prefer the time between editions to be in the 5+, or better the 7+ year range. But now that I think about it, I don't think I have any games (created in past 10 or 15 years) for which the time span was shorter (maybe...

Judges Guild Makes Statement About Goodman Controversy [Updated]

Good point! While trying a funnel can be a fun experience, I personally also prefer playing/starting at level 1 or 2.

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

Yeah, I think that's a pretty good summary of how I handle things - if I know the game engine well enough, I'm willing to house rule early (either after reading or after the first adventure); if it's something new, I try to play RAW at least a couple of times before I make changes (among others...

Judges Guild Makes Statement About Goodman Controversy [Updated]

DCC is special in that it effectively has a d20/3e-based engine tweaked towards an old-school feel and fully embraces randomness. I understand if you don't want to give money to GG in the current situation, but I can recommend giving the game a try at a convention. It's really a lot of fun...

Judges Guild Makes Statement About Goodman Controversy [Updated]

The whole affair is quite sad - DCC is one of my favourite systems and I had a generally good impression of Goodman Games, and I feel, even if they completely severed the ties to Judges Guild/Bledsaw right now, they have already tarnished their reputation. I still hope GG take this step soon...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

I'm a bit surprised here: I thought Deep Cuts was already out? (DriveThruRPG) But if I get it right from the campaign page, the crowdfunding is mainly for a print version?

eBook Prices - Is it just me…

Over here (Germany), it's quite common for eBooks to be priced like the paperbacks (and discounts are rare). So I'm mostly used to it, although I do sometimes wish they were a bit cheaper. And it can create the odd situation that the English version of a book is only a third of the German...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

This summarizes pretty well how I feel about the whole thing after this statement. I'm still not sure if I want to actually back this project, but the solution they found is good enough for me considering the circumstances.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Yeah, this is what makes the whole affair doubly sad. They seemed to be very much about the idea that old-school gaming is for everyone and that it should be a place that feels welcoming to people from marginalized communities.
