Fun to Read... Boring/Bad to Play

Yeah, I've had similar experiences with reads-better-than-it-played, at least for me and my groups. My List: Vampire & Werewolf Traveller: The New Era (1st Traveller game I played) WEG Star Wars Original Dark Sun setting. Ravenloft Setting (have consistently had great experiences with the...

Quest for the "perfect" all-in-one game

I don't have Arcana Unearthed, so perhaps that's what you are referring to. However, my Arcana Evolved has monsters, item creation feats, and a setting primer all in one book. It was billed as a variant Player's Handbook, so yes, the DMG was recommended. Don't know that I'd call it essential...

    Pathfinder 1E PaizoCon 2010 News

Another thing to remember is that the Advanced Players Guide is an option book. It is not considered a core rulebook, would/should be subject to GM approval. Specific to the power creep issue, in earlier blogs & posts on the Paizo boards, they had stated they were specifically wary of...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Neither did I. However, a search found this: http://www.enworld.org/forum/pathfinder-rpg-discussion/262990-rpg-net-ripping-pathfinder-apart.html The best part is the "fluff" of "Angriest Backstroke in the World" is from the RPG.net poster. The "Raging Swimmer" feature simply states the...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Oh I had no doubt that you meant it the way you stated it. However, my phrasing is a bit easier to demonstrably illustrate than your overt slam. Seriously, just because you don't like some of the mechanics you know for a fact that game mechanics are a secondary concern to Paizo and that the...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Yes, I'm a fan of the HD cap after a certain level. I liked seeing that in the Conan RPG after forgetting it from my AD&D days. It's a simple fix and one that my campaigns see frequently.

...or hit points need reigned in. The power scale doesn't always have to increase. Adjustments in the other direction work also.

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Change that to "mechanics supported by fluff" and I think your accuracy rating rises signficantly. I love my game mechanics. The Pathfinder Core Rulebook is fairly fluff-free and downplays Golarion influences. The rest of the Pathfinder line freely mixes crunch and fluff.

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Everyone's experiences are different, I suppose, but I haven't seen anything closely resembling this. Fighters got additional class features that make them more effective in combat, better feat options across all levels of play. CMB/CMD went a long way to making special manuevers more...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Also, while it's nowhere near the tidal wave of product that 3.x received, Pathfinder receives active 3rd-party support. The Genius Guide classes and Fist Full of Denari classes are considered PF-core in my group. Finally, all of that niche 3rd-party supplement product I acquired over the...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

Pathfinder exceeded my expectations and continues to do so with the expansion of the line. Whether that's due to superior game design, an alignment with my personal gaming tastes, or both I can't say for certain. Pros: Maintains 3e flexibility yet also managaes to produce a stronger...

We Are All Neutral Survivalists: Alignment in a Complex World

Wow. Seriously, thanks to everyone for reminding me how pointless alignment discussion threads are on this board. I'd forgotten about the propensity to assign a narrow view to each alignment as objective fact, the attempts to reinforce viewpoints by skimming the surface of politics & religion...

GMs: Campaign & Adventure Design Strategies

(For the casual pick-up beer-n-pretzels GM, "These aren't the droids you're looking for...") Lately, I've been giving thought to how I might better introduce thematic elements & atmosphere into my campaigns and/or adventures. My goals are to provide the players with a better game experience...

We Are All Neutral Survivalists: Alignment in a Complex World

I respectfully disagree. Evil characters could be selfish and indifferent to whether or not they harm others through their actions. All evil characters do not have to be sadists. As for the Lawful, Neutral, & Chaotic classifications - I consider your assessment overly simplistic in the...

We Are All Neutral Survivalists: Alignment in a Complex World

Kudos for the effort & time put into your analysis. Unfortunately, I don't agree with your catergorization of the alignments nor some of the alignments assigned to sample characters. Yeah, I know, disagreement in an alignment thread. Who'd a thunk it?

    Military Campaign

If spoils of war aren't viable (which as a player I'd question since that was a prime attractor for the medieval soldier), then I'd go with the treasure rewards coming as part of the mission-supply process. Special forces or not, if they are actually part of the military, you're going to have a...
