D&D 5E (2014) Legendary monsters are not solo monsters

Good points! I think casters need more (maybe just 1 more each) slot of 8th-9th. This way when your Big Spell fizzles (which is likely) it's not such a big deal, try again next round. You'll have the freedom to actually, for ex., use a 3rd level spell in a 9th slot without feeling like an idiot...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing the power of spells?

8 + 6 + 5 = DC 19 ... at 20th level. Does not seem that high to me. Again, I'm talking vs. the BBEG, who usually has MR, energy+condition res/immune, possibly auto-save ontop of his actual save which if lucky could be missed if you were lucky enough to have the right spell to target the BBEG's...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing the power of spells?

Good thoughts. I find it ironic that there was an EN thread about LOW level caster weakness (because I think they're AOK at Low until Mid). It's at Mid-Hi where I see alot of potential probs, mainly too few 7-9th slots. Not "casters are useless" -level probs, more like casters are only able to...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing the power of spells?

LOL! You are not wrong, I was referring to mid-hi levels, where I think most martials will have +1 weapons ... but of course I can't prove that. But certainly has been true in all D&D eds. beforehand. Also, there is a thread here on EN, someone did the stats on the 5eMM, the preponderance of...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing the power of spells?

I keep hearing Meteor Swarm and Fireball held out as uber-spells. They are not that great against BBEG non-minions. At mid-hi level you hit ubiquitous Magic Resistance, Fire Res/Immunity, Evasion, Saves, Legendary Auto-saves, plus the very real consequences of frying friends/treasure/McGuffins...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

That would certainly challenge Bounded Accuracy and push Team Ranged ahead of Team Melee ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

Yeah, meteor swarm is great in the right circumstance, but not so much when things have energy immunity/res, auto-save, magic res, evasion, etc. A fair number of mid-hi monsters will shrug it off. I only say this because it seems to be touted as an instant-win spell or something - which it can...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

Most mid-hi monsters have magic resistance (I didn't run the numbers myself, someone else did on another thread here at EN).

D&D 5E (2014) Experience with Legendary Resistance: How is it working for you?

This is what I've been saying for awhile, and I anticipated it would take several months to a year for people to playtest High Level (HL) enough hours to start seeing/believing it - the LFQW 'wariness' is just that strong. At HL, almost everything has Magic Res, Energy Res/Immunity, and then...

D&D 5E (2014) What is good One shot for 3rd level?

The Forge of Fury (3e) could maybe be done in that time, seeing how relatively fast 5e combats are.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Yes - that may be necessary, and would be the way of ensuring your 1 and only spell slot of 7/8/9th for the day does not fizzle.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Low-mid level wizard is fine, a solid middle-tier class IME/IMO. High level wizard, with ultra-few 6-9th slots and almost everything resistant to energy & magic, auto-saving legendaries, etc. Now that is my worry - we'll see when enough people have had enough time to put the system through its...

D&D 5E (2014) MM: How many high levels monsters have some form of magic resistance?

Keterys wrote: True, but bear in mind lower level spells need higher level slots now to scale (unlike prev editions), compounding the pressure on those high slots.

D&D 5E (2014) MM: How many high levels monsters have some form of magic resistance?

This is my as-yet unproven suspicion. The nerf from 2 high level slots to 1 came late in the playtest. Knowing from experience (prev editions) how spells can look amazing on paper but fizzle in real game after resistances, saves, immunities, party positioning, distraction, DM interpretations...

D&D 5E (2014) MM: How many high levels monsters have some form of magic resistance?

This is one of the reasons I worry about high-level play for casters. Going from ~five 8-9th level spells/day in prev editions to a single spell/day is really gonna suck when legendary monsters can 'choose' to save 3x/day and beyond that everything has some form of energy and magic resistance. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

I misrepresented nothing - in what you quoted I said "once per short rest" clearly ;) My issue is not whether Meteor swarm is good, it's whether the caster who used that 1 slot can keep up for the rest of the day against the 'epic' foes at these levels. Want to see some volume high-level...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

I hear ya, I would probably not blow a 9th slot for FB. I was just comparing to older editions, there are now in 5e two pressures on your 1 and only 7th-9th slot: 1) you are reduced to 1/4 of these slots now and 2) your lower spells no longer 'level-up' for free and may compete for these slots...
