    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

Let's not forget that a +2 shield or a +3 suit of plate armor will definitely require attunement, so using both means that 26ac fighter gets to decide whether he wants to use a decent magic weapon, a ring of resistance, a belt of giant strength, or one of numerous other important items for his...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

To be fair, they wouldnt shut up about rules modules since the playtest started; it's kind of relevant if those got cut.

D&D 5E (2014) Is every Official Adventure Going to be about Saving the World?

Of course not. When they do Planescape, you'll have to save the whole multiverse.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

AFAIK there is absolutely nothing preventing you from doing this already, as long as you don't screw with WoTC's trademarks (beholders, mind flayers, etc).

    D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger

I'm really not a fan of ranger spellcasting, but I have to admit that the fighter and rogue do a good enough job of doing what a 4e-style martial ranger does that a 5e ranger eith no magic might be a bit redundant for the PHB1.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Excerpt: Creating a New Race

I get where you're coming from, but at the same time, that sort of thinking leads to a less interesting and innovative game. for example, i loved the RP "side effects" of warlock incantations in the playtest. (Like, learning a word of power might make you stutter.) I thought they were a great...

D&D 5E (2014) Flavor and Mechanics: Examining the Rogue

I think Quick Hands, especially in conjunction with Use Magic Device, has to be considered one of the most important mechanical aspects of the thief archetype. The ability to use potions, caltrops, nets, flasks of oil, topple carts and suits of armor, etc. as a bonus action is already quite...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: Creating NPCs

My favorite part of this preview is the references to the section on NPC interactions that makes use of bonds, flaws, etc. I was hoping these would be mechanically integrated into the interaction skills and was worried when that wasn't in the PHB. Being able to suss out enemy flaws and ideals is...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Personally I worry that an OGL-type license would bring back the bad of the 3e d20 splatbook explosion along with the good. One of the great things about 5e is that you can make a ton of cool characters with just one book. There are certainly gaps (psionics, int-based martial tactical...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Excerpt: Creating a New Race

I think it may have been a wise move to leave out the "crunchier" aspects of race creation. Any set of guidelines would have to be quite loose, and you wouldn't want DMs to be upset that they "followed the rules" but got an overpowered or underpowered race out of it.

D&D 5E (2014) The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

Nice thing about tool proficiencies (in tandem with the training rules) is that your PCs have a way to learn to use wacky new technology they come across in their inter planar travels. Tool proficiency: Helicopter please!

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock/Paladin/Sorcerer Question

Some kind of elf. Sworn fey knight of Correlon, servant to the Fairie Queen(e), with the inborn magic of the deep Feywildfairyelffae. You know, standard elf s&$@.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Harmless Suplex?

Basically, when you "grapple" someone you just grab them. But since it replaces an attack rather than taking a whole action, once you get extra attacks you can do stuff like grab someone and then shove them to the ground, so they're prone and unable to get up until they break free from you. Or...

D&D 5E (2014) Please someone explain to me

Certainly an option. And if the paladin sucked I could play a fighter/cleric too. But honestly if they're going to spend precious PHB pages on a class, shouldn't it do what it's supposed to do?

D&D 5E (2014) I Am SO Over The "Rootless Vagabond" Archetype

The flip side of that is "80-page Backstory Man," who expects anyone to care about his character's tragic past with its cast of thousands. Equally boring, but more attention-seeking and time-consuming. Anyway, The Wanderer is certainly a cliche, but so are the Noble Paladin and the Apprentice...

D&D 5E (2014) Please someone explain to me

Come now, it makes perfect sense that a wizard is better at turning into a dragon than a draconic sorcerer.

D&D 5E (2014) Can my table focus on making things fun instead of optimizing?

Flaw: this NPC is obsessed with being remembered, and every time he meets someone new he will spell out his name to them and force them to address him by it every time they speak. If someone forgets or mispronounces his name, he will fly into a violent frenzy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Screenshot Hero Lab 5e (Non-Official, Homebrew)

I mean, their actual logic seems obvious: they want any officially branded D&D product to be full-featured and polished to WotC/Hasbro standards. They probably also want to keep a tight rein on their copyrighted content while making it available in the program, which means they need full control...

D&D 5E (2014) If you aren't buying magic items, where will you spend your gold?

Yes, but all of those options require legwork. You have to wait for Sotheby's to offer a Picasso (really friggin rare) or track down a guy who already has a Picasso, bargain with him to buy it, and then either have the painting shipped to you (risky!) or go pick it up.

D&D 5E (2014) If you aren't buying magic items, where will you spend your gold?

The best magic item analogy I've heard is the high-end art market. Even Bill Gates can't just walk into a store and buy a Picasso. He first has to find someone who owns a Picasso and is willing to sell it. Since magic items are hand-crafted by incredibly rare masters of their craft, the analogy...
