How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

Then I guess that it's a good thing that I never said that.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

This is true for RPG players in general. I believe it's called "grognardism" or something? Anytime you have a game receive new editions or spin-offs, then it will rear it's ugly head. I remember back in the 2000s when I was getting into ttrpgs for the first time, I stumbled upon Vampire: The...

RPG Archive: Star*Drive for D&D and Traveller

As I heard, Rich Baker said it sold over the moon... for publishers other than WotC. For WotC, it wasn't as much as D&D. The SW license mandated that they couldn't maintain it due to a clause restricting internal competition. So it got the axe, and couldn't even be reprinted as a new edition for...

How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

We clearly value completely different things then. I don't see any of that in the areas that I personally care about. They're not. WotC took the Alternity pdfs off drivethrurpg back in 2008 and never put them back. Besides, just because the pdfs might be available on drivethru for some games...

Worlds of Design: Breaking the Fantasy Mold

I would love to see Americana fantasy. Stuff like Oz, Tall Tales, fearsome critters, guns and the like.

RPG Archive: Star*Drive for D&D and Traveller

Star*Drive is my favorite scifi space opera rpg. While the tropes it is based on are hardly original, the execution is quite novel. There’s no other setting like it. I’ve checked out Traveller and Stars Without Number, but they don’t compare. The lore is amazing and goes to extensive effort to...

How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

My suggestion is to use the suffix -tech instead of -punk. Cybertech, steamtech, etc. whenever you’re talking about an aesthetic genre that isn’t about punks fighting The Man™ in a dystopia.

How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

Yes it has. In the 90s TSR was happy to throw money at more novel settings like Dark Sun, Spelljammer and Planescape. Then WotC canceled everything except Forgotten Realms. I prefer TSR’s Alternity. Unfortunately WotC canceled it and took the PDFs off drivethrurpg. I hate the hobby because...

Worlds of Design: Breaking the Fantasy Mold

I’m completely burned out on the medieval fantasy genre because it is so oversaturated and stagnant. I only touch post-industrial settings, but unfortunately those are a crapshoot.

How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

I think seeking novelty is largely pointless. If you can think of it, then there’s a good chance it’s already been done before in some form. All storytelling is iterative and done in the context of past stories known to the storyteller. I think the ttrpg landscape is gray and lifeless compared...

New Edition Of ALIEN RPG Includes Romulus Material--But Kickstarter Delayed To 2025

This franchise really should've been retired a long time ago. All the studio interference and director insanity has turned a once interesting premise into incoherent mush.

D&D Movie/TV Netflix Planning Forgotten Realms D&D TV Show With Stranger Things Producer

Netflix has a history of this. Hence why I suggested a Dark•Matter series to save money. Urban Arcana could also work, if they want to have D&D monsters specifically. They could use an effect similar to “woging” from Grimm to indicate that a human actor is actually a magical creature like a drow...

D&D Movie/TV Netflix Planning Forgotten Realms D&D TV Show With Stranger Things Producer

Of all the IPs owned by Hasbro, they decided to adapt the most generic one? For a genre that has really high budgets due to all the SFX? I get that the competition isn't great, but really? Hasbro owns Dark•Matter. Cryptids and anomalies and stuff are really popular on the internet. A DM tv show...

    New generic contemporary/urban fantasy?

I don’t touch games that have only one setting. I had awful experiences with certain religious fandoms in the past who viciously cyberbullied me for defying their sacred canon. Now it’s multiverse or bust. Only way to be sure the community aren’t nutjobs.

    New generic contemporary/urban fantasy?

I don’t mind rules lite, it’s just that these new games have settings that range from nonexistent to a couple pages long at most. I know that 90s ttrpg settings tended to be self-aggrandizing messes that were completely irrelevant to the actual gameplay, but that doesn’t mean the right answer is...

Legacy of Kain Is Getting a TTRPG

LoK is imo a really weird choice to adapt into a ttrpg. It’s a character-driven series with worldbuilding that is provisional and has undergone a lot of rewrites between games due to turnover in development teams. The timeline has canonically been rewritten multiple times and we see several...

Legacy of Kain Is Getting a TTRPG

Exactly. This is a franchise famous for letting you play Shakespearean vampires in every title. But the tabletop game is about playing the vampire hunters? What? I can understand a making a game about playing the vampires and then a spinoff supplement about playing the hunters, but this? Who is...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

4e already did the work. Creatures have an origin based on what plane they originated from (feywild, shadowfell, astral sea, elemental chaos, etc) and a type based on their body plan (animate, beast, humanoid, everything else). They can only have one of each. Then they can have tags keywords, as...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

It also had origins and subtypes. The distinction between the four types was also pretty easy to eyeball. The problem with 5e is that it makes types exclusive and the criteria for what type a creature is ends up being arbitrary inconsistent nonsense. Why is a griffon, owlbear and centaur are a...
