D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

I went back and looked at that table. I stand by my previous statement. That table is a joke.

AD&D 1E Fireball throughout the ages

13th Age "It's traditional to roll heaps of dice with Fireball. If you're going to use dice conventions everywhere else and roll them all for one spell, roll them here" Which I guess is them saying roll dice for this, even if you use static average damage everywhere else in the game...

AD&D 1E What are examples of "gotchya" encounters from Gary Gygax?

Exactly. As Tim Kask has stated many times as well re; how they played/play- There has to be "a way out". A way to avoid or circumvent. If that means the PC's s have to bypass or ignore then that option is there. But forcing the PCs into cannot win situation is not the modus operandi of an...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

13th Age is not for everyone, for sure. One thing I have just kind of realized, I have almost no houserules for any of the non D&D systems I play. Runequest, T&T, FFG SW, and others. If I do , it's a handful of small things. But for every version of T/OSR and WOTC D&D, PF I feel the need to...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

🤷 As a DM, I'd rather have the work done for me when it comes to interesting monster abilities. That's what I am paying someone to do. It doesn't have to be complex. But it does need to be interesting. 13TH Age is a perfect example of interesting and varied monster design without beating a DM...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

Though not Official, you might want to take a look at this author and their works- Monster Manual Expanded and especially Monster Talents

D&D General Let's talk about sandboxes, open worlds and hexcrawling

Go download a copy of Relics and Ruins- its a free OSR game on drive Thru. It has the neatest little randomized hexcrawl sandbox/adventure in the back. I'm totally swiping it. That said, not normally a fan of the Hex crawl-but the above sounds super fun to me.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

So the formatting was weird and I could not add anything. ^ "pop free" means you are no longer engaged with the creature. IOW you've been knocked out of melee range. And as you can see on certain rounds the Ogre can Attack one target and then attempt to knock everyone who is engaged with it...

D&D 5E (2014) Goodman Games is Reincarnating Castle Amber

No PDFs per the contract. Same with the JG reprints which kept me from supporting the KS for those.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

I get that. That's where the action and moves have to be really distinct, and where 4E did not go far enough. 13th Age is a big step forward in that regard.

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play Basic D&D? How Was/Is it?

You should check out the Holmes Manuscript BLOG I linked too. Dr. Holmes did not intend for players to go onto AD&D, that was a TSR addition. Of course, they were trying to pump up the oncoming ruleset.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

Not sure I would agree. The concept of big monsters like an Ogre or Giant, or even a very strong monster (Frankenstein- Dracula) picking up human sized folks, and throwing them around has always been a staple of folklore, fantasy fiction and cinema. IMO, D&D as a Fantasy RPG should model...

AD&D 1E What are examples of "gotchya" encounters from Gary Gygax?

On a serious note. I recall a Paladin getting half his +5 Holy Avenger lopped off in the Green Devil Face. DM ruled the Holy Spirit that resided in the sword and gave it it's powers had been obliterated. Brave. Righteous. But boy was that a stupid move. I know some people hate the module...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e the Least-Challenging Edition of D&D?

Me too. I'm not up for save or die all the time, or brutal level drain, but 5E just has a nice shiny veneer of deadliness on top when it comes to conditions. Nothing solid underneath. This also goes for 4E.

There are no gotcha encounters. Only bad players :sneaky::ROFLMAO:
