    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

No doubt it's easier. I prefer it as well. Agreed, this is complication that should have been ironed out from 2E* *Actually it was all about backwards compatibility with the prior edition. they did not want to alienate the 1E/BECMI fans.

    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

What is addition and subtraction? It's math,. Sure, not everybody adds or subtracts at the same speed. I'm no genius but I don't consider adding or subtracting small numbers complexity that "quite intelligent" people should have an issue with or having a "hard time keeping straight". It's...

    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

I failed 7th Grade math and had to go to summer school 🤷

D&D 5E (2014) Have I Already Reached the "End" of 5e Product Support?

I would say "get out for a bit of fresh air" and check out some other games for a change of pace. I know I couldn't handle all those paths and 5E over and over.- or any other game for that matter.

    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

I really don't understand the issue with THAC0. It's basic math. THAC0= 16. Foe is AC4, 16-4 is 12, roll a 12 or better, Big whoop. Figure it out for each melee and missile weapon., out I on your character sheet, never worry about it again.WAY better than O/BX/A D&D charts. It's easier and...

    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

Bingo. WOTC has taken Gary's AD&D business model amped it up on steroids (and shifted focus off standardized rules for convention style play) to produce a "shared experience WE want the community to have". This is because they realized in 3E, the Genie was let out of the bottle with D20/OGL...

    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

Looking back and also in reading this article I can say I agree even less with many of the philosophical changes that were made by the 3E team, and appreciate 2e even more. The whole "shared experience" and desire for WOTC to have everyone on the same page, for me, is not a good thing...

D&D 5E (2014) Mechanics you don't want to see, ever

Haven't read the entire thread-apologies for dups. Heavy dose of opinion here. Critical Threats/Hits ala 3.x Cyclic Initiative and Abilities/Spells that are tied to "until the start/end of your next turn" and the like Level Drain/Level Loss (though Undead need something to make them more...

TSR Jim Ward: Demons & Devils, NOT!

I started in the 70s, but came into 2E late into its life cycle. The names did not bother me at all , but did not care for the way things had changed with the great wheel and Planescape as a setting/canon. Whats worse was I didn't get but a handful in the Monstrous Manual. Had to seek them out...

D&D General Starter set campaigns from older editions?

I forgot about Under Illefarn. Thats a good one as well. I ran it using DCCRPG in The Wilderlands. Haunted Halls of Eveningstar also is a fun small sandboxy type thing. The Halls are the focus, but there plenty of other plots/side things for the PCs to get into.

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

I have used Mearls' method as well as several other variations. Frankly the whole concept of initiative and rounds is the immersion breaking issue for me. Its a game within the game. I'd prefer to just do away with it, but modern D&D systems are too tied the initiative check and action economy...

D&D General Starter set campaigns from older editions?

Not sure I can say a lot without spoiling things, It's fairly big regional sandbox. There are a great many towns of various sizes, adventuring areas both dungeon and wilderness. The background of the world/region is that for a long time a great winter covered the world due to the presence of a...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Thinking about this some more- the entire transition of most RPGs when the exploration/story stops and combat occurs- Ok, now let's get ready for our mini wargame. Probably why I adore Dungeon World so much. Combat is no different mechanically than the rest of the game play. No initiative, no...

D&D General Starter set campaigns from older editions?

I would also add, that as a whole, nothing beats the PF Beginner Box in recent years. It not only includes a solo and a GM adventure, it covers alot of territory in teaching people how to create and run your own adventures with extensive tools, including a map to populate, some ideas how to tie...

D&D General Starter set campaigns from older editions?

The 3.5 Black Dragon cover was the version that had the updated rulebook from the 3.0 set that allowed for character generation. It's the starter set I used for my son when he was a kid.. And recently, I ran some of 3.0 starter set adventures for my daughter 8 yo, wife, and my son who is now...

D&D General Starter set campaigns from older editions?

Totally forgot. Well worth your $-I would dive into Troll Lord Games' - Aufstrag campaign- The A series modules. A0-A5 is like LMoP on steroids. I've run them in C&C, but they have 5E versions now too. Edit- Actually A0 & A1 are probably more adventure material than LmOP is. But it's worth...

Yeah IF is great. There's some free adventures on the site too, and the same gentleman behind IF is the creator of Basic Fantasy RPG.

D&D General Starter set campaigns from older editions?

Advenures from starter sets- 4E- Reavers of Harkenwold in the DM Kit is fantastic and will give you a lot of bang for the buck. The other starter set from 2008 or so- not worth your time. 3E-I've got the 3.0 and 3.5 (lack dragon)sets. Neither are all that great if you have experienced...

OSR Newsworthy(?) I think so. Wee Warriors is back!

If you strictly mean an OSR D&D style game? Depends on the mood and game play desired- S&W Whitebox when I want to make my own detailed house-ruled variant Iron Falcon when I want to adhere as closely as possible to my LBB days But for an edition of D&D? Moldvay/Cook/Marsh B/X sets.
