D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

I like Protection Style but I agree it could use a boost. Your fix is on the right track but way too complicated and over-designed. The simplest solutions I've seen are to remove the reaction requirement and/or increase number of uses per round. Uses could equal number of attacks or simply...

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal vs. Ghosts of Saltmarsh

Yes It depends. Both. It's a tough call. They are difficult to compare to one another. Neither are fully connected campaigns, but Saltmarsh is slightly more so. I like both (for different reasons) but I also have serious issues with both. I'd say both of the books are 50% awesome and 50% crap...

    D&D 5E (2014) Natural Attacks

Sorry for the necro. Posted in the wrong thread. o_O

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Four New Subclasses

That's fine, but Path of the Beast grants a "natural melee weapon", not an unarmed strike.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Four New Subclasses

Beast looks cool overall but I still hate that 5E didn't do a better job clearing up the difference between weapons, melee attacks, unarmed strikes, natural weapons, etc, etc. In general, abilities that grant natural weapons aren't all that great and create confusion. I've read up the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best blaster cleric

I like both but for a cleric that focuses more on casting, I'd probably go with Light. Light's spell list is very versatile - mix of close and long range, single-target and AoEs. Radiance is a very good AoE and doesn't require spell slots to boot. Warding Flare adds some decent cc and they get...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you play D&D if you knew there would be no combat?

I voted "NO" but it's more of a "probably not" for 2 reasons: 1. There are far better systems for a combat-light campaign, and 2. I'm iffy on joining a group with people I don't know, especially for game that is going to be a big departure from the norm.

D&D General Replacing 1d20 with 3d6 is nearly pointless

Dice pool systems handle degrees of success much better than over/under single roll system. They allow for a LOT more granularity for task resolution. Crits are a reason too I guess but certainly not a major factor for me.

    Pathfinder 2E Rate Pathfinder 2E

Got it. You are exactly right on the approach to rules language. PF2 throws a MASSIVE amount of text at the reader, so when I encountered something that the rules assume, I wasn't in the head space to see it. I was expecting to be explicitly told.

Survivor Core Races- DWARF WINS (in a Scottish Accent)!

Dwarf 21 Elf 15 Half-elf 9 Halfling 8 Human 9 Humans are boring in 5E. Halflings are awesome in 5E.

Well maybe that somewhat proves my point - I can't for the life of me find where it says that. o_O

    Pathfinder 2E Rate Pathfinder 2E

I haven't followed this thread too closely but I've been taking a look at PF2 lately. I am a 5E player and someone who wants more choice in 5E. So I've been looking to see if there's anything to salvage to add customization options to 5E. From what I've seen so far, I rated it Average. That...

    D&D 3.x the 3e skill system

I liked the granularity of 3ed's skill system but it was needlessly complex. It added significant time to character creation and leveling up for little gain at the table. And it got messy when multiclassing. As mentioned previously, 5E's skill system is an improvement over 3ed in every way...

TSR Jack Vance's Forgotten Contributions to D&D

I knew about Vance's contribution to magic but the other details I didn't know. Cool stuff. A few years back I tried getting into the Dying Earth stories but had a difficult time. I found the writing to be very flowery and just didn't grab me. Just not my style I guess.

D&D 5E (2014) Half-Elves are taking over my game! (Or are Humans underpowered?)

The short answer is humans are underpowered. Variant human is better but being the only race that gets a feat (in a game with a broken feat system) is clunky design. Here's my "fix": https://www.enworld.org/threads/buffing-human-and-removing-variant-human.667109/ This +1 The long answer is...

D&D 5E (2014) Compare Spell Jammer to Starfinder

Great post hawk, and this is SO true. I used to work in the video game industry. I wasn't on the narrative/writing side but I have a good sense of storytelling and world-building (guess where I get that from ;) ). I would frequently have discussions with writers or upper management who wanted...

D&D 5E (2014) Compare Spell Jammer to Starfinder

I'll admit it's semantics but I wouldn't use the word "goofy" for what you described. When goofy is used to describe content it tends to be a negative. I equate it with content that is distracting, unintentionally funny, or if it is intentional, slapstick humor. Spelljammer is akin to Victorian...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using different skills in 5e

Totally agree. Good design advice in general. I've been looking at PF2E a bit and I was shocked when I saw proficiency bonuses. They have 5 levels of proficiency that add bonuses of +0, +2, +4, +6, and +8. So far, so good. But the kicker is once you become trained, you also add your level! Also...
