    D&D General Class vs Identity

It's why I never understood the resistance to multiclassing. I'm not a fighter or a rogue, I'm a mercenary ready to work for the highest bidder.

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Draconic Options

I do agree the change helps. It is still situational though. The biggest issue with dragonborn is that breath weapon has the biggest "cost" but it's situational and limited. This UA certainly helps but it's a band-aid as opposed to a fix. The increased damage helps make it a bit more viable...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Draconic Options

Really don't like breath weapon being part of the Attack action. Dragonborn is also a subpar choice, and that relegates them to being choices for classes with Extra Attack only.

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

While I disagree that it's "bad communication", it's also the only class that has such a requirement. So why have it at all then? It's clear from all the ranger revisions that there are plenty of options to make the ranger work without any handshake agreement between the player and DM.

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

Yes, the PHB ranger is bad. It's the only class that requires specific conditions to be met in order for some of its abilities to work. On top of that, the abilities aren't even that great.

D&D General How do you sandbox ?

Great post, I entirely agree. I wanted to emphasize that it's the clues and hooks that get the players to the locations, not the locations themselves. I mean you can run a simple hex-to-hex sandbox but I find the breadcrumb style way more interesting. One nitpick is the word "plot". I try to...

D&D General How do you sandbox ?

I love sandbox-style campaigns. I can't imagine running a hack & slash railroad campaign again. No thanks. That said, the best lesson I learned about running a sandbox campaign is that the "sand" is just as much about clues, hooks, leads, and rumors as it is locations. Actually, I'd argue that...

    D&D General Filling the Gaps

For certain types of games (low-magic, gritty), I always want more detailed "survival" mechanics: fatigue, thirst, hunger, etc, and additionally, better rules for hunting, finding water, and treating different types of wounds and ailments (medicine, herbalism, etc). The problem with those types...
