    The awesome encounter that wasn't.

Yeah, yeah... *grumble grumble* (You've got a point, there. Cut that out! ;) )

    D&D and violence

Hey, OP, I have your expert: Joyce Brothers. :D I'm only maybe half kidding - Dr. Brothers went down to Lake Geneva in the 80s and hung out for a few, as she was being asked to speak about D&D (this being the age of the moral panic), and wanted to be able to formulate an opinion. According...

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

So far, I'm leaning towards "day of," with the caveat that I'm going to go down the line and ram everybody through it. I'll have spell lists and equipment lists already drawn up (with a basic "dungeoneering package" already included), and with Classic there really isn't much more to do than...

    Respect for the DM?

See, I can't get behind validating this tendency. I'm far from a proponent of d20-based D&D, but I do believe it can be used to good effect - if the first thing you do is to rip this particular canard (that "this is 3e so we, the players, get to call out the DM if he changes something") out by...

its a matter of taste, but..mystara or greyhawk?

I suppose it's worth asking what ruleset you're going to run it with (as, by default, Greyhawk would be the AD&D world and Mystara the Classic), but you can make either world work with any ruleset really, so that's more out of curiosity. If you're picking up Classic stuff, may I recommend...

BECMI vs Rules Cyclopedia vs Castles & Crusades

Which is a "pro" in Classic's column - when you've got 25 years of TSR-quality material to draw from versus not-quite-10 years worth of d20 quality. ;) C&C gets a lot of good attention; I haven't given it a whirl myself, but a lot of folks love it. As far as the real deal goes, though, I'd...

DA1 Adventures in Blackmoor - what is that machine on the cover?

Yeah, I'd use the stats for a juggernaut. Classic D&D stats are in the AC9 Creature Catalog, AD&D stats in T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil.

FFG to publish Warhammer and Dark Heresy RPGs

I got a chance to try it the other night, and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd recommend picking it up if you're a fan of the setting.

    Tucker's kobolds, man, Tucker's kobolds! :D

    Can you do inifinite damage?

LOL I almost have the opposite problem. Some of my guys refuse to be restrained from making completely self-destructive decisions during character creation because it's fun. I remember we did this one-shot. I had this crappy 3e FR module that I felt like running; it was a pretty railroad-y...

    2ed- elf= bow bonus &dwarf=axe bonus?

You've maybe heard of a book called "The Hobbit"? ;) 13 dwarves, 13 swords. Which, as a dwarf-to-sword ratio, is very nearly 1:1.

    The five-room dungeon

Fair enough - I suspected this might not be your intent, but it did seem to imply that. Just figured I'd pipe up and see if you were aware of how it read.

    The awesome encounter that wasn't.

The OP's example is an example of masterful GMing, not the converse. Take an enemy that's balanced in terms of HD (or CR for recent editions), and play them as hard and smart as possible. If they're drow, this is the only way to run them properly - that's where genius-level intelligence comes...

    2ed- elf= bow bonus &dwarf=axe bonus?

The stated reason, IIRC, is that they train with said weapons from an early age. Being that old has got to be good for something. Dwarves, conversely, train against certain enemies (as opposed to certain weapons), so they get a slew of bonuses vs. humanoids and giants. Keep in mind, the...

    The five-room dungeon

I gotta say, Merric, I don't agree with the assertion in your blog post that a megadungeon can't handle a plot-based adventure - and I find the association of the format with "training wheels D&D" somewhat condescending (and just plain'ol uninformed). A DM that knows his dungeon environment...

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

Hah - same here, I can assure you! All the same, I'm psyched to see that Games Day can support not one, but two old-school games. (Will wonders never cease!) Do be aware, however, that I'm going to have my PCs go after yours. :P

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

Aaaand, looks like I've got some slots free again. I may have some new forum registrees (is that a word?) coming in to play in the Classic game, if that's cool.

A PC died in my campaign on Saturday

No, you need to accept that heroes die sometimes. Hell, at least you get a save. Traditionally (i.e., pre-d20), if an able-bodied, armed character or monster can get to a helpless character or monster, with a free round and nobody to interfere, they can just plain kill'em - end of story; fin...

A PC died in my campaign on Saturday

Why play a reckless barbarian character if you're so attached to him that you can't deal with him dying? Sound like the player set himself up with some unrealistic expectations and expected you to validate them.
