Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

Considering letting the Classic players roll on a table to score some extra experience - at least for your initial characters. I want you guys to have a chance of making it down to the real fun stuff. (I'm just way too lenient, y'know?)

    Building a Sandbox

EMPHATICALLY thirded; my fiance's sisters teamed up and got me this for Christmas one year, and it's made of 110% pure inspiration.

Basic D&D: Did it hook you?

Huh - I voted no, although the answer is technically yes. ;) I started roleplaying with AD&D, right on the cusp of 2nd edition (barring a short and very free-form session at camp, sans rulebooks or dice). Previously I'd devoured Choose Your Own Adventure, Fighting Fantasy, and Endless Quest...

    Whiney players....

That's just plain dumb, oh advocate of the absent-and-oppressed whiner. Giving the member of this community who's asking for advice would be the right way to go, here - the guy who doesn't post doesn't need your sensitivity (nor could he benefit from it). I gotta say that I don't see the...

Fantasy Art Staple That's Never Been Represented In-Game

HackMaster (as far as I recall) extends this to the total AC bonus of the shield - but the shield is, of course, going to take damage (and armor hp go away pretty fast in HM).

    Your Personal "3.75"

    Why bother with 3.75 - I'm already playing HackMaster 4.0! :D

How old were you when you started playing D&D?

I'm right in the sweet spot - 12 years old. We were bored at scout camp, and somebody ran "D&D" - only, with cards for random numbers, no books, and it was like the Wacky Races edition. IIRC, I played a dwarf mage (which as we all know, is impossible) (we all know that, right? ;) ), and we...

    Building a Sandbox

FWIW, D1-14 is widely considered considered the nadir of 1e design, and the precursor to the 2e railroad. YMMV. ToEE, I don't see where it fits in your argument - other than having a vague "moathouse, then temple" structure. GDQ, arguably could fit the "adventure path" description, but mostly...

Help me teach someone to play...

This is great. I've also successfully run The Orc and the Pie more than a few times - it gets the point across, for folks who can't grasp what it is I do with my Tuesday nights.

Help me teach someone to play...

While I have seen a first-timer make a startlingly good morale officer, there's something to be said for introducing Paranoia to someone after they've already got a head full of RPG tropes, so they know what it is they're not doing. ;)

    Remembering the Classics...

I'd love to say you didn't get me, there, but the twitching in my right eye says otherwise. ;) "Return" to the ToEE, indeed.

Help me teach someone to play...

Two thoughts: First, F all this noise about 3e/4e. 3e isn't a beginner's game - it just isn't. You want to introduce her to roleplaying, not a ruleset. I kid you not when I strongly recommend Basic Set D&D (the 1983 Frank Mentzer version). Not from some grognard-y high horse because it's...

KotB... The Caves of the Unknown

The HackMaster version of B2 places Quasqueton on the region map, FYI. The HM B1 also contains references to B2 (the "Mines of Chaos", which is the Aldrazar version of the Caves of Chaos) and the "Caves of Pandemonium" - whether this is supposed to be another reference to B1 that didn't get...

    Whiney players....

Calculated the total party level - with the traitor included - against the enemies - minus the traitor - and with an ECL or two knocked off for the disadvantage the enemies had (not knowing there's a traitor in their midst), have you? If not, than you're just blowing steam.

    On the Importance of Mortality

That's a pretty apt way of putting it. Hear, hear! Huh - that one I hadn't thought of. Have any examples?

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

And that would appear to make six; however, if we end up with folks left over who still wanna play Classic, I can fit pretty much whatever you give me - maybe 8 at the very most. (Table space depending, of course, although I'll be making very minimal use of minis, so we don't need all that much.)

Ooh, ooh, can I be the Emperor?

    Whiney players....

To the OP: Hey, OP. Re: Your crappy player Yecch. Find a way to not game with this guy. No gaming is better than bad gaming. The "woe is me" refrain whenever he's up against something that (in his infinite wisdom as a player) he believes he can't handle is one thing. (From your...
