Build Challenge: Highest First+Second Round Single Target Damage, No Magic Items/Surprise Round

Well you don't need the guaranteed hit; the rules give it to you... :) With that said banded accuracy and getting advantage plays a large part in 5e. Taking out crits and needing to hit takes a lot of interesting mechanics off the table.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monk/Rogue/Warlock Build questions

If you are only playing a campaign up to the early mid levels then yes. Monks can be damage competitive and you could build them that way. In a longer campaign or in a group with other damage dealers, you want to build Monk to level 6. * Monk 2 Flurry of Blows * Monk 3 - Very cool path...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monk/Rogue/Warlock Build questions

What is causing the builds to be MAD is the Warlock. Rogue is Dex which is a primary stat of most Monks and Ranger is Dex/Wis which are the primary stats of most Monks (Wis is the "casting" stat for Monk Stun).

Check Out CURSE OF STRAHD'S Table of Contents!

I had already known they were missing, but it is still sad to see a lack of Dark Power checks. Not having Dark Power checks in Ravenloft is a bit like not having psionics in Darksun.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monk/Rogue/Warlock Build questions

A few points you missed. First Hex only works against checks, not saves, so it is only really useful from a check standpoint if you are playing a strength based Monk/Warlock built around grapple. Second you overlooked the +2 damage from Dueling, so with a 60% hit rate you get: Hex+Flurry =...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Healer Feat Broken?

The healing feat is sort of broken, but I think it has a place in low magic settings where you still want healing, but not divine casters.

I tried powergaming a wizard in AL

You are investing a feat and a lot of your point buy budget into Con. What type of Wizard are you playing and how many concentration spells are you going to use? Unless you plan on building your character around a signature concentration spell, I would think a Con of 14 and War Caster which...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monk/Rogue/Warlock Build questions

Shadow vs Open Hand - Shadow is causing you to dip Warlock (more on this in a bit) vs Open Hand which gives you often overlooked synergy with Stun (Open Hand saves auto fail if you Stun them first). Shadow gives you teleport for use with your bonus action... this is awesome and if it is core to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are Rogues mostly archers?

Attacking twice gives you a higher chance to trigger sneak attack as a rogue, so two weapons may be better from a purely damage perspective. For me the most interesting class feature of the rogue is cunning action and not being in melee combat gives you a lot more options to use an item as a...

D&D Movie Takes Cues From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

I expect this tone to work very well. In my experience, most role playing games at some point in the campaign descend into silliness and eventually need to be pulled back in order to complete the plot - this seems to be a staple of having a bunch of people around a table having fun. This same...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

You could play a life priest that goes Strength build for story reasons, but trying to use this as a comparison for DPR using a club borders on absurd. Life priests are caster first and foremost.

Check Out These Peeks At CURSE OF STRAHD

The date of June 2016 looks to be deliberately left visible as well. Curse of Strahd is the first adventure path from WoTC that really has me excited. I can't wait for my gaming group to play through it. These images only make me more interested.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

From a mechanical standpoint, which seems to be what the OP is concerned with, the Cleric has a caster stat of Wis which is superior from a defensive standpoint to Int/Cha of most other casters. Cleric's also have the best buffs/debuffs in the game. From a non-mechanical standpoint being a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why no Proficiency bonus to AC?

As you gain more levels you generally have more HPs and can survive more attacks. So you can fight more enemies at a time, but only up to a certain point.

D&D 5E (2014) Why no Proficiency bonus to AC?

The idea behind the current system is that 100 orcs (insert other horde of low CR creatures) is scary to a 20th level character. If you take away bounded accuracy you can't use these creatures in higher level modules, as they won't hit short of a crit.

    D&D 5E (2014) The whip needs love.(updated last time)

I would use the Charger feat as your template here and likely drop the +1 to Dex. Giving someone the +1 to Dex feels too powerful to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) How Good/Bad are Monks?

Monks can be a lot of fun; I like them with one level of caster to add a bit more to their kit, but this is not required. The optimized caster level would likely be Arcana priest from SCAG for access to the melee cantrips and a Wis caster stat.

    Gahh!! Wild shape!?

I think they did a good job with wild shape and I have not found it disruptive in the games I have played. Polymorph on the other hand is straight up broken. I have no idea how it made it out of the play test without better limits on the CR of the creature the target turns into.

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

A monk on its own does seem a bit lacking with a group of min-maxers, as its strength is in having lots of little abilities which fail to have the same big game splash of a larger focused ability - such as a Paladin's nova (which combined with a crit is a lot of dice). If I was playing in a...

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

I have limited experience with a shadow monk, but from my experience I would put them in the same class as a bard - a great add on character, but not great in a small group. Darkness and Silence have great utility and really add to the character, as does moving through shadows. Being able to...
