What if Studio Ghibli directed Lord of the Rings?

AI is getting really good at being the villain. Just in time for the creation of SkyNet :sneaky:

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

Yeah that isn't classic tragedy. What your presenting here is just "PCs made a bad decision". Again, classic tragedy is (normally) about someone in good position who, due to a flaw in their character, ends up losing that which means the most to them. Othello. Romeo & Juliet. Most of ancient...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

I don't. It's all been very cut & dry since AD&D 1e https://easydamus.com/alignment.html Except for the people who type "all" as if they are speaking for all people, which is what I was addressing (y)

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

As would AD&D 1e (y) "ALL"? You mean "all your experiences" because no one knows how all D&D groups play. That isn't even how Alignment works. In any edition. It provides zero combat advantage, but, can sometimes be useful in social situations (talking rather than fighting).

"Only good" for your table. Many of us use RAW alignment just fine

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

Best practices: don't use alignment

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

And when a character repeatedly breaks alignment, a DM should change their alignment. Behavior determines alignment, not the opposite. I don't know how a DM "punishes" players, but I'd find a new DM. Which has nothing to do with D&D alignment or how it works in a setting with dragons, elves...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

Not if you're playing TN characters. IME some players wouldn't stick to their PC's chosen alignment, then blamed the system. Which is weird since D&D describes how each alignment functions.

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

That looks more like a GM presented a "GOTCHA!" scenario than tragedy. It invalidates player choice and characters making bad choices is at the heart of classic tragedy.

How Would Your Favorite Game System Handle This?

Mutants & Masterminds 3e: Initiative is a combat thing and wouldn't come into play unless things go FUBAR. Then all involved roll and it's worked out as normal. If combat occurs in multiple scenes where maybe PCs 2&3 have to neutralize security agents, then we run simultaneous, alternating...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

1e: it was better when the DM selected a PC's alignment based on how the player ran them. Plus, alignment languages still mattered.

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

That's A LOT of buy-in, though. The GM is asking the players to essentially run their PCs into the ground. I'd like to see how this would work

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

You could use D&D to play "Friends". Doesn't mean that it's the best system for it. D&D lacks the deep characterization more sophisticated systems like GURPS or Lords of Olympus possess.

How Would Your Favorite Game System Handle This?

Mutants & Masterminds 3e: PC1 is in a van parked outside monitoring the site's surveillance/computer system (Skill Mastery: Technology), disables the freight elevator (Technology) and maintains comms with the team PC2 is crawling through the ventilation system (skill challenge: Stealth +...

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

You need flawed PCs who bring about their own downfall. Better to use GURPS or another ttrpg that gets into the personality traits of the PCs and their flaws can be exploited by the GM. Actually, no other ttrpg would do this better than GURPS since its Disadvantages are perfect for creating...

Which game books most inspire the "sense of wonder" in you?

Still does it for me to this day. BECMI is real D&D and reading the pages brings the writings of Tolkien, Brooks, Howard and others to life. The Rules Cyclopedia inspires me to run campaigns.

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

No there's a lot worse. On playing different games, this is another benefit of online play: gamers can find groups that want to play what they want to play instead of being stuck with whatever their local group is addicted to (y)
