D&D 5E (2014) How do you interpret the Oath of Ancients?

I found this on another message board and IMO it's pretty accurate. 1. Be kind yo, and fight against sadness 2. Find places where people are cool dudes and shield them from the bogus ones 3. Keep real chill and awesome, can't spread coolness without being cool yourself, dude 4. inspire others...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells: the Good, the Bad, and the Downright Orcish Grandmother

Apologies if this has been addressed already, but the Automatic damage isn't increased with higher casting. "At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the initial damage increases by 1d12 for each slot level above 1st." This means that it hits hard...

[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

Next thing you know, we're going to have Weapon Speed initiative modifiers and then a slippery slope to bonuses/penalties to hit Specific Armor Types... :o

    D&D 5E (2014) Level 10 Character Ideas

    D&D 5E (2014) As a DM, can I just say, Screw Paladins :)

Smart vampires don't do straight fights, especially in the face of a Paladin. That's why they have slaves, minions and hostages do the work for them. :3

    Pathfinder 1E Halp.

What's important (to me, at least) in game/adventure design is this: * Make a series of related events rather than a story/plot. Don't assume there's only one route to get from A to B to C. If you only use one route and players can't figure out how to progress, you either push them in that...

D&D 5E (2014) An AI walks into a bar, and instead of ending humanity, creates new D&D spells

Gland Growth would be a buff for Dragonborn breath weapons. I remember some older spells that allowed casters to alter the sensory outputs of various spells. One of my favorite tricks was to send a burst of barking neon/glowstick-colored magic missiles at enemies.

    D&D 5e Firearms Question

"A few hundred years before the Spellplague" is 2e and 3e. 4e's the Spellplague; 5e is 'current' FR. Gond (and/or his followers) is cited as being responsible for the invention of the starwheel pistol and his churches are a (probably THE) likely source of said weapons. There are also rules...

TSR's Marvel Super-Heroes RPG: The Original Awesome Mix

I only had a handful of characters during that time period... a total rip of Protoman, a Sailor Scout (where one of the other players was my cat), and a rich old doctor with wings and gun expertise who couldn't hurt anything we fought because we also had a Deity and a Angel (not me, sadly) on...

    D&D 5e Firearms Question

Short answer: Yes. AD&D 2e's Forgotten realms had pistols (starwheels), rifles (arquebeus and musket) and a shotgun (blunderbuss) all powered by smokepowder (considered a magic item). They had rules for misfires (a 1-3 fouled the weapon) as well as 'exploding dice' for damage (if you rolled...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Sorcerer Fix

I kind of like the UA Rune Magic attached to the Sorcerer. Instead of a spell list, the Sorcerer can attune [X] runes to his person, giving him a suite of "spell-like abilities" (some of which are scalable). The number of runes to which he could attune would scale by level, perhaps. Perhaps...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Little late to weigh in, but eyyyy. Bard was my favorite 2e class. Half-Elf was my favorite 2e race because of the multi-classing options. The Bard's Handbook was one of my favorite 2e splats becasue it added more m/c and actual Bard lifestyle/RP stuff. Now, 5e's Half-Elf Bard is one of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) (OOC) (5E) The Village

I just wanted to pop in and get a tally of who was going to play what, but alas, reality claims you again, @Kiraya_TiDrekan ... get well and all that. Random thought: Maybe D&D just isn't the game to run on these forums (for anyone, really) ... maybe something with less crunch, more story...

    D&D 5E (2014) Anyone got stats for a Dinobot?

Dinobot (Beast Wars) was a velociraptor. Looks like Zardnaar was looking for Grimlock, leader of the G1 Dinobot 'faction'.

D&D 5E (2014) A freely-aligned NPC race who bind their elder's souls to constructs when they die - how would you do this?

In 4e D&D, there existed a race of psychic crystalline beings called Shardminds which, mechanically, sounds like your jam. You'll have to do some mining for the info, though, as 4e is no longer supported or readily available online. (See what I did there? ^_^)

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Class Design Criticism

I actually liked the concept put forward by d20 modern, in that all core classes 'capped' at level 10. This required you to m/c into other classes or prestige classes in order to continue advancement. Given that none of my d20 Modern games ever made it to level 10, multi-classing was a...

    Wereravens. Wereravens Everywhere.

Is he an infected Wereraven (ie. did he used to be people)? If so, house-rule that he can't pass on the disease and that only True Lycanthropes can do so. (Made-up rule that has some basis in lore, some in past editions). If he is a True Wereraven, tell him that only [specific family/faction...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can't decide whether to play a sorcerer, a wizard, or a druid.

Land Druid could make you wish you were playing a Moon Druid. That said... Druids are rad. They're the perfect "tool kit" to add to any party. They have a wealth of combat, battlefield control, information and healing magics. Land Druids can add even more of the same to their arsenal...

D&D 5E (2014) Legacy of the Crystal Shard Mine of Phandelver

I don't have any useful advice, but I had to laugh when I read the title because I read it as: "The Legacy of the Crystal Shardmind of Phandelver" and I was like COOOOOOL! If you didn't know, a Shardmind was a 4e race of psionic humanoid-shaped creatures made of crystal. Thought it'd be great...
