After seeing it mentioned here, I am thinking of making a "skill initiative" (d20 + Int) to represent how quickly one reacts in social situations. It also keeps the quiet player from being bulldozed into losing multiple chances to act by having some sort of initiative order instead of freeform...

I had a full table of 6 players, so I used the 6/4 model to ensure that everyone had a chance to do *something* even if every check succeeded. Honestly, I tacked on the skill challenge just to give a demonstration of it. I had no idea it would be so wildly popular. Made me happy, though. :)

For the demo I am doing tonight, I made power cards for each of the 6 pregens. Then I thought, why stop there? I also made cards for the conditions. That way, when they are taking Ongoing Damage from the dragon's breath weapon there is a card in front of them to explain it. Same for Prone...

I thought I was the only one... :) Baen donated several boxes of books to the Army while I was enlisted. I read nearly the entire series from those donated books while I was on my tour of duty overseas. The Honor Harrington series is high quality all the way.

I don't always want my fiction to be Machiavellian and horrendously complicated. When I do, I read Jordan or Martin. Sometimes I like to go back and read some simpler, but just as enjoyable fiction - like the Azure Bonds trilogy. Alias, Finder, and Dragonbait may not be the most complicated...

Yes, on all counts. My group that I DMed fell apart after I joined the Army (big surprise), and I have yet to have a stable group since. However, having a large pool of people to draw from that I trust would be just as good. I will be behind Enworld VTT one hundred percent.

Also keep in mind, this character can really load on the damage with this power. He has already taken Arcane Brute, so it would be 1[W] + Int (power) + Str (Arcane Brute) + 1d4 (Arcane Strike) + Str (Arcane Brute bonus to Arcane Strike) And he can do this with a greatsword/axe.

Not really. :) Most damage bonuses we are seeing are in the range of 1-5 points. By letting the Duskblade add his strength SCORE, it could easily be 16-20 points added at first level. Making it strength*modifier* would bring it back in line.
