AI is going to hack us.

I witnessed a friend's interaction with Gemini last night, and I was floored. He had a simple question about fashion. In Gemini's response it included a bit about how it's wrong to objectify women, which really had nothing to do with what he was asking about. But he then went on for another...

    When disagreeing…

I have always tried to interact with people online the same way I would if they were sitting across from me at a bar. Another rule I've given myself is to walk away for 24 hours when I post a disagreement with an idea. It allows me to compile the replies, figure out which replies aren't even...

    What Are Your Non-Gaming Hobbies/Interests?

Playing bass and lead vocals in a punk band. Drinking. We have a ton of great breweries in Iowa.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Ugh...the OP is right...this is exhausting. I think it all boils down to, regardless of what is or isn't going on behind the scenes... Do your players think they're playing in a sandbox? Are they having fun? Any decent GM with experience on both sides of the screen can pull this off.

I totally get it...those things aren't needed at all. My only issue with your statement was that you were limiting their use to just one four-hour session. Heck, I was a submariner in the Navy, and all we had were 1e PHB, DMG, MM, and some dice. I'm not about to say that any system is better...

Those few things aren't just getting you through the next four hours of play...it's getting you through the next 400 hours of play.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Absolutely agree on the importance of the Session 0 conversation. In the nearly 40 years I've been DM'ing (A)D&D, I bring to the table "something sandboxy and something a bit on rails". Much to my dismay, I have only run the sandbox once. I run what the players agree upon. So, either the...

I am definitely in the camp that neither is better, they're just different. When I was first introduced to D&D's ascending AC in 3e, I thought "Oh, this will be easier". Then it didn't take long for me to start encountering AC 35 with an attack bonus of +25...but sometimes the AC was 42 and...

Arrrrgh! It gets frustrating when people I usually disagree with make excellent points. :) I would like to believe that most of the people in the ENWorld world are here to educate themselves and share experiences. @Reynard You seemed to lament or express wonder about originally starting this...

Absolutely! I can definitely understand someone coming from modern games not grasping right away that AC is not the To-Hit number.

Keep in mind that the Defensive Adjustment also applied to Saving Throws. In the text, IIRC, there is a description of how the number alters AC in the opposite direction. This table can definitely be confusing if players weren't reading the rules.

And I think this is where we come to the center of some of this discussion...at least for me. Let's say I have an idea for a campaign that takes place in a fantasy world. For me, the (A)D&D series is what I use for my fantasy games. After some thought I find that using the current edition...

I also know where the letter "U" comes in the alphabet, and Skills are listed in such a fashion. Also, the illustration used on that page along with the formatting makes a total mess out of the text. The text on that page also explains what happens when you fail to blindly use a magical device...

I'm aware that this is an option, but the downside is that the company doesn't get my money. I'm saying that I would be happy to pay a lower price for this option.

If WotC could just sell me something that's basically a hardbound version of the SRD for around $40 I would be delighted. I don't need drawings taking up space and jacking up the price of a rulebook. I don't need any fancy formatting in a rulebook. I just need rules. I have bounced off of so...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I'm pointing this snippet out just because we're both on the same page of different editions of a book. Also, to enforce your avoidance of gnoll-related tangents, I only used gnolls in the example because they happened to be fresh in my mind from an adventure I was reading last night. As GMs...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Mearls is a gamer, who also just happens to be a designer. He's also very accessible, if you go to conventions or hang out here, so you can even ask him yourself. What a lot of us are using to interpret his meaning is context. Context from conversations, blogs, posts, and even games he's...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

As someone who has had the pleasure of talking with Mike and some other WotC creative folks at GaryCon, and also had the opportunity to play in some of their games... I can definitely say that Mike is rooting for the players while they encounter fun and challenging obstacles.
