What Free Games are out there?

I know. I took a look after I posted the link. At one time the rules were there, but that one time was about 3 years ago I'm thinking. I don't know if I still have a copy of the rules, but since I don't see them readily available I'm loathe to e-mail them without permission from Zaon. Maybe...

What Free Games are out there?

OK here's one. I'll just edit this post to include others. Zaon (instead of Zoan) is here: http://www.zaon.com/rpg/ can't vouch for the rules but the art is very good. Sorry, I can't seem to find the RPG rules for Zaon anymore, but enjoy the art. Here's a website with links to about 40 free...

What Free Games are out there?

Are you looking only for TSR/WotC RPGs / basically re-writes of same? The Fantasy Trip springs to mind as non-TSR/WotC product. I assume it doesn't need to be a commercial system since BFRP and OSRIC are on your list. There are many of these on the internet in all levels of complexity and...

What are the characteristics of an "olde school game"?

I think the specific ideas are limited to "old school" D&D/TSR. En garde, Traveller, TFT, T&T, Runequest, EPT, etc. are all part of the pre-1980 "old school" gaming, but decidely different in rules mechanics.

What is your local game store situation?

Four I consider local, but two have such horrendous parking situations (not their fault) and traffic situations I can never justify the time to get to them. The other two have nice staff but are really focused on GW miniatures and card games. Oddly enough, one of the coolest local board game...

How we experienced the game, in totally different and incompatible ways

Regarding organization, not so. Wargames had been around for many years before hand. Look at Avalon Hill, SPI, etc. games from the period. En Garde is also well organized as well as Traveller, not much later than OD&D and prior to PHB and DMG IIRC. But again to add to the contradictory...

How we experienced the game, in totally different and incompatible ways

So true. I didn't even know there was a parry rule in AD&D until about 2 years ago, although I read the PHB several times back in the day. Either missed or dismissed it. Yep, and in my case we came from OD&D so we stuck with many of the rule interpretations, or even whole constructions, we...

How does a farmer end up with a magic item?

So true. My farming relatives in the US come across arrow heads but not much else. It never hit home how long some places of the world have been settled until staying with some friends in Greece. I'm all excited about holding a piece of an ampitheater from 1000 BC, they could care less. In...

    The Magic-Walmart myth

lol I think the Walmart idea is more just the idea of handwaving how you can come about things, it follows this "old schoolism" "13) Screw realism, screw ecology, screw explanations, screw economies, screw physics. The explanation is out there for why an ogre is wandering the city without...

Tell me about those old 'zines

When you said old 'zines I thought you meant Zines, those old mimeograph early photocopier underground fan based works. Still have some fond memories of the salicious Grups zine.

How does a farmer end up with a magic item?

How most farmers find rare items these days, they plow them up. Not so common in the US, but in Italy, Greece, etc. sometimes you can't dig 10 feet without hitting some artifact a 1000+ years old. Rhodes and Crete are notorious for this.

What are the characteristics of an "olde school game"?

That's it in a nutshell. Do that and you'll have that old school vibe and fun.

Monte Cook on target audience of RPG Supplements

I can second that. I understood "take over" as the next big thing in games, RPGs fading to more of niche status like happened to wargames. In that computers will take over the market.

Would you play your game here?

lol that's the problem with an open room, it relies on the good manners of everyone. All it takes is one disruptive person to make your space seem less than ideal.

Would you play your game here?

Not responding to MonkeyDragon but a good outline for why I think you should try to go upscale. And some suggestions to keep cost down and margins up. key, the biggest barrier to gaming is we live in different towns, travel time is important. A well palced store couild solve that problem for...

Would you play your game here?

Way to small to attract us. We use a 6x3.5 dinning room table and that doesn't have enough space for the three of us, what with chips, drinks, battlemat, books, etc. Do you mean no chips and dip?! or pizza!? Can you afford the license to serve food and drinks, maintain the place to pass...

Would you play your game here?

Yes, most definitively IF... It is conveniently located. This is everything. It is private. It is climate controlled, not cold in winter or swealtering in summer. We can bring our own beer, or buy suitable at the location. (We are fairly picky) We can bring the snacks we like, or buy suitable...

Monte Cook on target audience of RPG Supplements

Well they actually did, even if not by 1995, certainly in the last 5 years. The on-line multiplayer games and the counsole game markets dwarf pen&paper RPGs by orders of magnitude. Electronic games did take over from RPGs just not in the way people thought they would.

Question for my fellow slobs: Do you ever leave the house to prep for games?

Same here, but it rarely get's like that. Nevertheless, I do like to get a change of venue some times. Starbucks are one of my favorite places, they got coffee, wi-fi and usually an open table if you hit the right one, sometimes even good music. Any coffee house would probably do.

Forcing rules to accomodate character concepts

I agree with the OP pretty much 100%. Almost a sure sign of the entitlement mentality when one thinks a wrist-crossbow should be an uber weapon when it is actually a pretty poor one. Yet I think it important to separate the complaints of I can't be an uber-character right away that can throw a...
