The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

They didn't exactly promise, but in at least one YouTuber interview (the Bob World Builder one), Kyle Brink said he expected it would be done by the end of 2023, spoken with enough confidence that you'd think he said "easily" in there somewhere. And remember that these interviews were done in...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

My working copy of D&D 5th Edition is, in fact, a printed-out copy of the latest revision of the Basic Rules (see attachment). I'd agree that its 1981-esque character creation lineup (Human/Elf/Dwarf/Halfling & Fighter/Cleric/Rogue/Wizard) with abbreviated spell & monster lists indeed has an OSR...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I agree that it's healthy for the RPG community at large, which in turn reflects on WotC, but I can see why they don't see it that way. Besides what I wrote in my previous post about it being "giving away" old materials, I think they are concerned this will draw interest away from 5th Edition...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I'm inclined to agree. How hard could it possibly be to do "Ctrl+F, Vecna"—or better yet, use a simple "search in file text" tool—for a handful of IP-specific terms across a couple dozen RTF files? Of course it's not a "good idea" in their mind; it's giving away more of their vintage game...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Best we got was the September 2023 D&D Beyond Community Update, and it wasn't great news. They bumped the "Review previous SRD editions for inclusion on CC" back from "In Progress" to "Upcoming," so it's not even being looked at at the moment. "Before adding previous editions into Creative...

D&D Movie/TV Check Out These Previews Of Hasbro's New D&D 'FAST' Channel

I don't understand why the Freevee app doesn't have even basic categories (News, Gaming+Anime, etc.) for live TV channels. Most other streaming apps have this.... I like Freevee, but I have to use Plex just to find the channel.

D&D Movie/TV Check Out These Previews Of Hasbro's New D&D 'FAST' Channel

It's an awful lot like over-the-air/cable/satellite television, yes. But streamed over the internet instead!

D&D 5E (2014) WotC Sept 2023 player survey is live.

I was in the middle of taking this survey and finished typing up an essay at about the halfway mark only to get "This survey is no longer accepting responses." Did I really hit the cutoff? The survey link banner is still at the top of D&D Beyond.... And now I know. They should update D&D Beyond...

WotC Community update for Sept 22, 2023. Note Lost Mine of Phandelver will be unavailable to claim after Oct 6th

I think the main point you brought up to begin with is that you thought non-3/3.5 SRDs were never "on the table," which means our whole back-and-forth has been over semantics (I guess it's natural, being an RPG forum and all ;)). Let me just say this: the older editions getting SRDs and going CC...

WotC Community update for Sept 22, 2023. Note Lost Mine of Phandelver will be unavailable to claim after Oct 6th

Not gonna pretend I've read them through, but my rough understanding is that the 3/3.5 SRDs are far more "feature complete" and AD&D/2e-like than the SRD for 5th Edition is, so "reverse-engineered" retro-clones adapted from the 3.5 SRD would—theoretically, at least—be on more legally stable...

WotC Community update for Sept 22, 2023. Note Lost Mine of Phandelver will be unavailable to claim after Oct 6th

Maybe so, hence what I said in my original post: If they're gonna take this long to comb over an actual, finished SRD like 3.5, I feel like a CC stripped-down version of 4e, BX/OD&D, or AD&D/2e might as well be wholly off the table. Not a fan.

WotC Community update for Sept 22, 2023. Note Lost Mine of Phandelver will be unavailable to claim after Oct 6th

Regarding the timing of older editions (3E/3.5E) going CC. Bob World Builder Interview (full version) Starting at 18:18: Bob: So let's say just to maybe, like, narrow down on this a little bit as well. You know 2024 - huge year for D&D. Um, is there any guess or, like, plan that by the time...

WotC Community update for Sept 22, 2023. Note Lost Mine of Phandelver will be unavailable to claim after Oct 6th

I don't have an exact quote handy (I will investigate), but I remember Kyle Brink on his apology tour said the ETA for the 3.5 SRD going CC was by the end of 2023 (pretty sure this was in the interview with Bob World Builder). I also recall him saying that there was a possibility other vintage...
