    Narrate This 3 HP Hit

I'm not a fan of any description that narrates the character reaction by anyone other than the player. 1. Remove "Painfully" 2. Remove "causing her some embarrassment and stress" 3. Revise. Luck isn't a player/character resource that's measured on its own (unless you're using luck mechanics...

D&D 5E (2014) 30 speed for all! Halflings, Gnomes, Dwarves were feeling left behind?

It would be interesting to see. Pathfinder has an alternative racial trait that swaps out Sure-Footed (+2 climb and acrobatics) for 30' speed. It would be interesting to see how many players choose that option.

D&D 5E (2014) 30 speed for all! Halflings, Gnomes, Dwarves were feeling left behind?

We have always house-ruled speed to a standard 30 (3x) for all small and medium sized creatures (which for the most part were just player character races).

Thoughts on Odd Number Bonus Stat Items

We used them all the time in 3x and still use them in PF. I don't see any issues with it. Usually a +1 in a non-important stat (ie one you're not leveling up anyway) isn't going to make much of a difference, at least in the games I play/run, and if it's one you're leveling up anyway, you're only...

D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

Non-magical DoaM mechanics have existed in D&D since at least 2007 and in Pathfinder since at least 2011 (it's entirely possible it existed before and I'm just not familiar with it). If one includes mechanics that allow a miss to be treated as a hit, it's been around longer (if a dice roll...

D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

I like to pretend that it's just meat. It makes me feel warm and cozy. But the closer I stare at it, the stranger it becomes, until eventually it's just a number I change from time to time because the game says I have to.

Pathfinder 1E Question for Pathfinder DMs

There's a joke in our group that the more time you spend customizing the monster the quicker it dies. I think though, that it only feels that way because of the amount of work spent on making it.

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

This is a very interesting analysis. As with you, I want to put story first. The question becomes whose story? I'm guessing from your post you want a single story with the GM in charge of the story? It seems to be that Indy games are about each character having a story and each character in...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

That's using Fate as the core. I was explore using D&D as the Core with simply a look at how to effect the Paladin without changing anything else in the D&D system. I'm not saying it's a good idea, only to explore the possibilities. Otherwise, bringing up Fate mechanics in a D&D Alignment thread...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

Which is kinda funny because it's convinced me in the opposite direction. And hence the thread was successful for both of us!

    Dying

I agree. I actually though about just giving more HP and getting rid of negative HP all together. But it seems my players are used to negative HP. Oh well. Maybe I'll create some soul leaving the body rules and when you reach 0 you can still interact with the world by using the Aid Another...

    Dying

I'm changing the dying rules (negative HP = unconscious and dying) to giving the character the staggered condition (this is PC side only, monsters die at 0 for the most part). I'll probably change diehard to remove the staggered condition. What I'm not sure about is whether to keep the -1 per a...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

In Pathfinder, which already has systems of points (such as Ki for Monks, Ninjas, etc) it would make sense. In 3x it's a little different. But yeah, I was thinking "Faith" points to power Lay on Hands, Divine Channeling, Smites, etc. It's certainly one direction it could go. In this case the...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

Yes, but that's using a system where the player can invoke their own aspect. Here it would be working as a balancing method (for those that think one is necessary). The Paladin wants to kill the innocent orc baby, which the DM thinks would be against his code. Rather than make him lose his...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

I find this discussion on Fate interesting. It would be even more interesting to see how it might be integrated into the D&D Paladin framework (obviously with changes to reflect the D&D system). Let's see, a Paladin has a list of requirements related to his code (based on whatever the forces...

It's D&D's 40th anniversary. Tell me your D&D history, and what it means to you!

1983 - Baltimore - My Cousin's House My cousin, who was in high school, ran myself and his younger brother through an A&D scenario. I was hooked. We moved to Norway soon after and I loaded up on gaming stuff as quickly as I could. It didn't matter whether it was Basic or Advanced, I had to have...

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

I think that's true with anyone's preferred edition. It's been decades since i played 2e and I wouldn't presume to know how to tweak it anymore. The same with me for 4e. PF isn't how I would have tweaked 3x which leaves me to tweak 3x myself. In my opinion, that's a good thing. When we talk...

    Thoughts on countdowns

Individually. They were competing against each other as well as the NPCs. As soon as any one of them reached 6 successes the race was over. If one of them reached 6 success before there were no more d6s to roll, that character won the race. If there were no more d6s before any of the characters...

    Thoughts on countdowns

For the fun of it, I used the countdown mechanism in my Pathfinder game last night. There was a climbing contest the characters engaged in. Rather than roll a bunch of d20s for each of the NPC contestants, I used the countdown mechanic while the players rolled their climb skill. I said that to...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

I would argue that it's not "granted" at all, but rather accessed through focus (be that mediation, contemplation, prayer, etc). But again, it's just my interpretation and a way to reconcile the conflicting perspectives of divine magic in 3x. It's more of a fluff thing than anything else and...
