I've noticed this in the past. The issue only seems to apply if you are renaming it to an already existing subclass. I haven't dove into the root cause to figure out why. In hindsight, maybe adding an extra space after the manual entry would trigger excel into treating it as a unique value...

Consider making a custom sheet by utilizing the "DesignSpace" tab and the named range "CharacterRaceBackgroundClassFeatDetails" to design a info sheet you like.

Stripping out all the conditional formatting, shapes, images, comments and everything but the Input Sheets, CSI & CSIII gets it to 5.06 MB. Reducing some of the static formatting could get it under the limit but man it is ugly and I probably broke dozens of formulas in the process.

I don't play Druids or Monks so please forgive my ignorance, but why would this be better as an option instead of just calculating to the best possible result given current character settings?

I think you should look deeper. I've got sources that say an unlicensed copy will work just fine.
